IELTS Writing Task 2 question
It is sometimes possible to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do, or don't have time to do, for example, household chores or looking after children.
Is this a good way of providing work for others?
Should people do these things themselves?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
In this modern society, it is becoming increasing popular to hire people to carry out household chores like washing dishes, clothes, cleaning, cooking etc which I certainly believe is positive in creating employment opportunities, although people should not depend entirely for help but carry out few responsibilities on their own.
To begin with, as time has changed over years people work overtime and extra hours at work which does not give them much time for household chores so they prefer to pay somebody to do things what they wouldn't prefer doing. For example, if a person works Monday to Sunday, 8 hours a day he will be exhausted and tired after work which will not give him enough time to cook, clean or do anything else; so they would prefer someone doing their duties in exchange of money.
Secondly, when it comes to taking care of infants or toddlers these responsibilities should be handled by individuals themselves as it may be dangerous to hand over your child to strangers. Children need emotional and physical attachment which generally cannot be provided by others. For instance, if a child is autistic and needs a parent all the time just hiring a nanny who has zero knowledge about autistic children can worsen the situation and make the child traumatised.
To conclude, I believe identifying when and where help is needed is most crucial and vital. Depending completely on someone else or handling everything alone is not always a sensible and smart decision. Seeking help in household duties when necessary is reasonable as it also creates job opportunities for others while handling certain responsibilities by oneself is also necessary.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the economic benefit of creating jobs and the personal responsibility of performing household tasks. The position is clear throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the argument regarding household chores is well-supported with a clear example of a busy worker, the section on childcare is more limited. The example of an autistic child is a specific, albeit slightly extreme, case that could have been balanced with more general points about the importance of parental bonding. Overall, the response covers all requirements, but the depth of analysis could be improved to reach a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Secondly', and 'To conclude' are used to guide the reader. However, the transition between ideas within paragraphs is sometimes a bit mechanical. For instance, the link between the exhaustion of a worker and the hiring of help is clear, but the flow could be smoother with more varied cohesive markers. Referencing is generally clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate for the task.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There is some attempt to use less common vocabulary, such as 'traumatised' and 'emotional and physical attachment'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of slightly repetitive or imprecise phrasing, such as 'do things what they wouldn't prefer doing'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey meaning without difficulty, it lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher band score. More sophisticated collocations and topic-specific terminology would enhance the quality of the writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'it is becoming increasing popular' (should be 'increasingly') and 'carry out few responsibilities' (should be 'a few'). Additionally, the sentence 'so they would prefer someone doing their duties in exchange of money' is slightly awkward. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. The control of punctuation is generally good, but the sentence structure could be more varied to demonstrate greater flexibility.
