IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is sometimes possible to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do, or don't have time to do, for example, household chores or looking after children.

Is this a good way of providing work for others?

Should people do these things themselves?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Household help in the modern world is becoming widely popular due to a fast-paced lifestyle. People have different opinions regarding whether obtaining household help is better or whether people can do their work by themselves. In this essay, I discuss both perspectives before explaining why I believe that both opinions have positive impacts if used for an appropriate purpose.

On the one hand, people argue that providing work to others as household work has created employment. This is because providing part-time or full-time work to somebody for help in the form of cleaning, food preparation, and washing utensils saves you plenty of time. This can be seen in international students who have to pay their tuition fees, rent, groceries, and extra expenses and need part-time work. All of these household chores provide them with work to pay their expenses. Another significant example is childcare university students. These students, after completing their two-year program, are eligible to practice residency, such as in-house private childcare, in-day care, and in-school care. In this way, providing work to these students is not only providing financial independence but also giving them in-field experience to excel in their expertise.

On the other hand, some people believe that people should do their work themselves without getting any help. I believe that when everyone is working in a nine-to-five job and travelling for work for long hours, without physical and mental rest, obtaining help from others is not a bad idea. One important example of this is a mother who delivers a newborn baby and needs care, and at the same time, the newborn baby needs care too. Furthermore, in this case, looking for help after childbirth is a good choice. Moreover, a recent case developed involving postpartum depression, "Lindsay Clancy", who killed her own three children. She had postpartum depression after her third child was born. Therefore, attaining help for the house or child is a viable solution to keep a balance between work and family.

Taking everything into account, I believe that household help creates jobs for those who actually need them. On the flip side, maintaining daily life in the house with help is not a bad idea.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the benefits of providing work for others and the perspective on whether people should perform these tasks themselves. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as international students seeking employment and the necessity of support for new mothers. However, the development of the second point is slightly uneven; the inclusion of the specific 'Lindsay Clancy' case is a bit jarring and could have been integrated more smoothly into the broader argument about mental health and work-life balance. Overall, the position is clear, and the response covers all requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used throughout, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'Furthermore', and 'Taking everything into account'. While the flow is generally good, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two main perspectives. The progression of ideas is clear, though the link between the general argument about childcare and the specific tragic example provided could be more refined to ensure a smoother transition between the general and the specific.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is sufficient for the task, allowing for some flexibility and precision. You use terms like 'fast-paced lifestyle', 'financial independence', and 'postpartum depression' effectively. There are occasional minor inaccuracies in collocation or word choice, such as 'providing work to others as household work' (which is slightly repetitive) and 'in-field experience' (which is understandable but not standard). However, the range is adequate to convey your ideas clearly, and you demonstrate an ability to use topic-specific vocabulary related to employment and social issues.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over basic grammar, and your meaning is always clear. However, there are some persistent minor errors, such as 'providing work to these students is not only providing financial independence but also giving them...' (which lacks parallel structure) and 'a recent case developed involving...'. Additionally, some phrasing is slightly awkward, such as 'obtaining household help is better or whether people can do their work by themselves'. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the essay from reaching the higher bands where error-free complex sentences are more frequent.
