Student answer (Band 6.0)

Topic: Household chores: Do it yourself or provide an employment?

This essay will discuss the topic about whether it is right for people to pay for things they don't want to do or not.

According to me, it is a highly subjective thing. There are people who enjoy doing certain things while others frown highly about it. Take me, for example, I hate doing household chores like cooking, cleaning, dusting, hoovering, laundry, etc. I think things that don't help you get more skillful for your professional work should be avoided. It will help you save time and you can utilize that time on things you actually love. Like having some personal time, or learning, reading, etc. So I will definitely prefer paying somebody to do these or help me out on a regular basis. It helps me save time and also helps others to make a living.

On the other hand, my friend Sarah, she likes to do household chores frequently. She says it gives her a sense of independence and makes her feel more invincible about herself. She likes cooking new dishes, tidying up her room according to her, and washing clothes herself. She also says it gives her a sense of ownership because at the end of the day, it's her clothes, her meals, and her house. So looking after things that you are utilizing yourself should be a norm.

Therefore, I think I will stand on a middle ground here. There is no correct answer as to whether people should do these things themselves. People have their own priorities, likings and mentality. Though I think it is definitely a good way of providing work for others. Because these things can be learnt with only some efforts and so it is good that people can find employment from this.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the economic benefit of outsourcing chores and the personal perspective on doing them oneself. The position is clear, though the development is somewhat simplistic. The essay relies heavily on personal anecdotes (the author and their friend Sarah) rather than broader societal or economic analysis. While the ideas are relevant, they lack depth and could be extended by discussing the broader implications of the 'gig economy' or the psychological benefits of self-reliance. The conclusion is a bit repetitive, but the overall stance remains consistent throughout the piece.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the other hand' and 'Therefore', though some transitions feel a bit mechanical or basic. Referencing is generally clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate for the task. To reach a higher band, the student should aim for more sophisticated linking words and ensure that the internal flow within paragraphs is smoother, as some sentences feel slightly disconnected from the main argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'invincible' (though used slightly inaccurately here) and 'subjective'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simple, repetitive phrasing like 'things' and 'do'. The word choice is generally functional but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. Improving the range of collocations and using more academic synonyms would significantly enhance the quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are frequent minor errors in grammar and punctuation, such as 'discuss the topic about whether' (should be 'discuss whether') and 'frown highly about it' (should be 'frown upon it'). The use of 'According to me' is a common error; 'In my opinion' is the standard form. Despite these errors, they do not impede communication. To improve, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement and more accurate preposition usage.
