IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is sometimes possible to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do, or don't have time to do, for example, household chores or looking after children.

Is this a good way of providing work for others?

Should people do these things themselves?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Working on your own is a healthy habit which provides you satisfaction, happiness and comfort whereas offering work to someone in terms of employment and salary is altogether a different concept. In my opinion, both the forms hold an utmost importance depending upon the need of the hour irrespective of any labour class divisions. I am more inclined towards the former school of thought of working myself rather than the latter and I shall elucidate my points of view in the forthcoming paragraphs.

Possibilities of keeping a servant or an assistant to ease your work depends largely upon the nature of one’s job and if a person can afford this comfort or not. For example, men and women from affluent families who are extremely busy in their lives can keep a personal tutor to teach them or a baby-sitter to look after their children or a cook and a cleaner to do all the other odd jobs. This is completely an overt decision and every other wealthy person does this to avoid hustle and be prepared in time.

Comparatively, working upon your own free will is a wise and prudent decision which comes from within. It leads to an exuberant and gullible peace of mind. For instance, hapless people who lack the time for gymming sessions so, cleaning their own house can become an activity to get rid of their monotonous routines of working out and gives them a chance to explore themselves. Similarly, looking after their own children, playing with them or teaching them creates strong bonds and a sense of plausibility develops among them.

Conclusively, a proper proportion of equilibrium should be maintained among all the activities that are carried out by ourselves. If a person is unemployed and asks for work then its a good decision to support them but with some time to be on their own during weekends.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, discussing the benefits of providing employment and the personal value of doing tasks oneself. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The argument regarding the benefits of hiring others is brief and relies on generalisations about 'affluent families'. The second body paragraph attempts to link household chores to 'gymming sessions' and 'gullible peace of mind', which is a slightly confusing line of reasoning. While a position is maintained, the ideas could be more logically extended and supported with more concrete, relevant examples to reach a higher band. The conclusion is a bit abrupt and does not fully synthesise the arguments presented.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into clear paragraphs, and there is a logical progression from the introduction to the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Comparatively' and 'Similarly', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced. The referencing is generally clear, although the connection between ideas within the paragraphs could be smoother. For instance, the transition from discussing 'affluent families' to 'hapless people' lacks a strong thematic bridge. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate, and the reader can follow the writer's train of thought without significant difficulty.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary range is adequate for the task, but there are instances of imprecise or incorrect word choice. For example, the term 'gullible peace of mind' is misused; 'gullible' refers to someone easily deceived, which does not fit the context of personal satisfaction. Similarly, 'a sense of plausibility develops' is an awkward collocation in this context. While the student attempts to use more sophisticated vocabulary, these inaccuracies occasionally hinder the precision of the argument. A wider range of natural collocations and more accurate word choices would improve the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'both the forms hold an utmost importance' (article usage) and 'its a good decision' (missing apostrophe). The sentence 'hapless people who lack the time for gymming sessions so, cleaning their own house can become an activity...' is structurally flawed and lacks clarity. While the errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the main points, they occur with enough frequency to limit the score. More attention to subject-verb agreement and punctuation is needed.
