Should people do these things themselves?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is occasionally feasible to outsource the work we are reluctant to do or lack time to do, such as housework or childcare. While some believe it is a smart way to balance professional and personal lives while giving employment opportunities to unemployed, others criticize this trend as they opine people should do such work themselves.

This phenomenon definitely provide employment prospects to the people and assists in strengthening the economy. Since many individuals live in nuclear families, they do not have enough time to fulfill job demands and complete household chores. As a result, they look for assistance to reduce their workload and have a better quality of life. This also benefits the jobless by providing them a variety of freelancing work which helps them financially. To exemplify, full-time students can make some cash while providing childcare to the needy families during weekends, , this mutually benefit both the families and the students.

I believe the trend is beneficial to the society as a whole. There should not be any compulsion to do all household chores themselves if people can afford outsourcing them. Since they study hard, earn good money, they have the right to hire others for works they cannot do because of busier schedules or just for the sake of comfort.

In conclusion, although it may appear morally wrong for some demographics to delegate housework to other people, for many dual-income nuclear families it is the only support in order to raise their children and maintain their sanity. Therefor, I strongly believe it is mutually beneficial for both the families and the helpers in the long run.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the economic benefits of outsourcing and the personal perspective on whether individuals should perform these tasks themselves. The position is clear throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention the benefits for the economy and the convenience for nuclear families, the discussion on whether people 'should' do these things themselves is less explored, relying mostly on the argument of personal choice and comfort. To reach a higher band, you could provide more nuanced arguments regarding the potential loss of life skills or the social implications of relying on others for domestic duties.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme. Cohesive devices such as 'As a result', 'To exemplify', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, there is a minor punctuation error in the second paragraph ('weekends, , this') which slightly disrupts the flow. Additionally, while the progression is generally clear, some transitions between sentences could be more sophisticated to improve the overall cohesion. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and the structure supports the argument well.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'mutually beneficial', 'employment prospects', and 'dual-income nuclear families' are used appropriately. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, though some word choices are slightly repetitive or could be more precise. For instance, 'works' is used as a countable noun ('works they cannot do'), whereas 'work' is uncountable in this context. Despite these minor inaccuracies, the vocabulary is adequate for the task and does not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You show good control over basic grammar, and most sentences are clear. However, there are a few grammatical slips, such as 'provide employment prospects to the people' (should be 'provides') and 'Therefor' (spelling error). There is also a minor punctuation error in the second paragraph. While you use complex structures, they are sometimes slightly awkward. To improve, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and refining punctuation to ensure that the majority of your sentences are error-free.
