IELTS Writing Task 2 question
It is sometimes possible to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do, or don't have time to do, for example, household chores or looking after children.
Is this a good way of providing work for others?
Should people do these things themselves?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
It is occasionally feasible to outsource the work we are reluctant to do or lack time to do, such as housework or childcare. While some believe it is a smart way to balance professional and personal lives while giving employment opportunities to the unemployed, others criticize this trend as they opine people should not rely on others for their domestic duties.
This phenomenon definitely provides employment prospects to the people and assists in strengthening the economy. Since many individuals live in nuclear families, they do not have enough time to fulfill job demands and complete household chores. As a result, they look for assistance to reduce their workload and have a better quality of life. This also benefits the jobless by providing them a variety of freelancing work which helps them financially. To exemplify, full-time students can make some cash while providing childcare to the needy families during weekends, this mutually benefits both the families and the students.
On the contrary, some argue that depending on outsiders for domestic work creates dependence and loss of life skills. They support the notion of self-dependence in order to perform regular domestic duties because they think it equips them with basic set of skills which are crucial in life. However, I believe there should not be any compulsion to do all household chores themselves if people can afford to outsource them.
In conclusion, although it may appear morally wrong for some demographics to delegate housework to other people, for many dual-income nuclear families it is the only support in order to raise their children and maintain their sanity. Therefore, I strongly believe it is mutually beneficial for both the families and the helpers in the long run.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the economic benefit of providing work and the personal aspect of performing domestic duties. The position is clear throughout, and the arguments are well-developed. For instance, the explanation of how outsourcing helps dual-income families maintain their quality of life is logical and relevant. The response is balanced, acknowledging the counter-argument regarding the loss of life skills before providing a personal stance. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more specific, real-world examples beyond the general mention of students or dual-income families to further substantiate the points made.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'As a result', 'On the contrary', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be slightly more sophisticated to enhance the flow. The use of referencing is generally accurate, and the paragraphing is appropriate for the task, ensuring that the argument is easy to follow from start to finish.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary is sufficient and generally precise, allowing for a clear expression of ideas. Phrases like 'mutually beneficial', 'employment prospects', and 'dual-income nuclear families' demonstrate a good range. There are some minor collocations that could be improved, such as 'providing them a variety of freelancing work' (which would be more natural as 'providing them with various freelance opportunities'). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, it lacks the highly sophisticated or idiomatic control required for the highest bands. Overall, the lexical range is solid and supports the communication of the writer's arguments effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. The grammar is generally accurate, with very few errors that impede communication. For example, the use of conditional structures and relative clauses is handled well. There are occasional minor slips, such as 'providing them a variety of freelancing work' (missing 'with') and 'equips them with basic set of skills' (missing 'a'). Despite these minor inaccuracies, the majority of the sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is used correctly throughout the text, demonstrating a strong command of English grammar.
