IELTS Writing Task 2 question
It is sometimes possible to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do, or don't have time to do, for example, household chores or looking after children.
Is this a good way of providing work for others?
Should people do these things themselves?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Nowadays, many people pay other people to do household work such as cleaning the house, cooking food or looking after children. I believe that this is a good way to provide jobs for other people, although some household tasks should be done by people themselves.
Firstly, paying someone to do household work can provide employment for many people. Some people do not have a good education or professional skills, so they can earn money by doing cleaning, cooking or childcare work. Also, busy people can save their time by getting help from others. For example, a working couple may hire a cleaner because they do not have enough time to clean their house after work.
However, I think people should also do some household activities themselves. Family members need to spend time together and take responsibility for their home. For example, parents should spend time with their children instead of always paying someone else to look after them. In addition, doing some work at home can help people save money because they do not have to pay another person.
In conclusion, I think paying people to do household tasks is a good way to provide employment and save time. However, people should also do some household work themselves, especially activities related to their family.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt, providing a clear position on the benefits of employment and the importance of personal responsibility. However, the essay is significantly under the 250-word minimum requirement, which limits the depth of development. While the ideas are relevant, they are presented in a somewhat simplistic manner. To reach a higher band, you need to expand on your points with more detailed explanations and perhaps a more specific personal example or a broader societal perspective. The current length prevents a full development of the arguments, which is a key requirement for higher bands.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Also', 'However', and 'In addition' to link your points. While the structure is sound, the range of cohesive devices is somewhat limited and mechanical. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the transition between sentences feels more natural and less formulaic.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication. You use common terms like 'household work', 'employment', and 'professional skills' correctly. However, the range is quite limited and lacks the sophistication or precision expected at higher levels. There is a reliance on simple, repetitive phrasing (e.g., 'do household work', 'do things'). To achieve a higher score, you should incorporate more precise collocations and a wider range of topic-specific vocabulary related to labor markets, domestic management, and social dynamics.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The grammar is generally accurate, and most of your sentences are error-free. You demonstrate a good grasp of simple and compound sentence structures. However, the range of complex structures is limited; the essay relies heavily on basic subject-verb-object patterns. To improve your score, you should aim to incorporate more complex grammatical forms, such as conditional sentences, relative clauses, or passive voice constructions, while maintaining your current level of accuracy. Punctuation is used correctly throughout the text.
