Student answer (Band 8.0)

It is increasingly common for people to pay others to carry out tasks that they either dislike or lack the time to complete, ranging from domestic chores to childcare. Although this practice can raise concerns about personal responsibility, I believe it is, on balance, a positive development because it creates employment while enabling people to use their time more efficiently. Nevertheless, certain responsibilities should remain with individuals themselves.

The most compelling argument in favour of outsourcing such tasks is that it creates legitimate employment opportunities. Domestic workers, cleaners, babysitters and other service providers can earn a living by performing tasks for which there is consistent demand. This is particularly beneficial in large cities, where many people work long hours and struggle to balance professional commitments with household responsibilities. For instance, a couple who both work full-time may employ a cleaner to handle routine domestic chores, allowing them to devote their limited free time to more important activities, such as spending time with their children or resting. In this respect, paying for assistance is not merely a matter of convenience; it can form part of a mutually beneficial economic exchange.

That said, there are responsibilities that should not be delegated entirely to other people. This is especially true of parenting. While a babysitter can supervise children when their parents are working, parents themselves remain responsible for their children's emotional development, education and upbringing. Excessive reliance on paid carers could deprive children of valuable interaction with their parents and weaken family relationships. Similarly, adults should generally be willing to contribute to the maintenance of their own homes rather than treating domestic work as something that is inherently beneath them.

Ultimately, however, there is no compelling reason why people should personally perform every task they dislike. Time is a finite resource, and purchasing services allows individuals to allocate it according to their priorities and circumstances. A busy professional, for example, may reasonably choose to pay someone to clean their home while using the time saved to study, exercise or spend time with family. What matters is not whether a person performs every household task personally, but whether they continue to fulfil their fundamental responsibilities.

In conclusion, paying others to undertake unwanted or time-consuming tasks is a legitimate and often beneficial way of generating employment. Although individuals should retain responsibility for essential duties, particularly those involving family and personal relationships, outsourcing routine work can make better use of people's time and provide valuable sources of income for others.
