IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is sometimes possible to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do, or don't have time to do, for example, household chores or looking after children.

Is this a good way of providing work for others?

Should people do these things themselves?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In today's busy world, people hire others to do domestic work or provide childcare when they are too busy or do not have enough time to do these tasks by themselves. As a result, unemployed people can find jobs and earn an income.

Many peoples are unemployed, as they do not have degree or professional qualifications. So, by getting this kind of jobs such as cleaning the house, washing cars, doing gardening things, taking care of child, etc helps them to earn some income and become independent. This is not just beneficial to busy family but also to individuals who are unemployed and want to earn money.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response is significantly under the required word count of 250 words, reaching only 107 words. This failure to meet the minimum length requirement severely limits the development of ideas. While the response touches upon both parts of the prompt—the benefits of providing work for others and the question of whether people should perform these tasks themselves—the discussion is extremely superficial. The arguments are not extended or supported with sufficient detail or relevant examples. Consequently, the response fails to address the task fully, resulting in a low band score for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organized into two short paragraphs, which is insufficient for a task of this nature. While there is a basic attempt at logical progression, the lack of depth makes the overall structure feel underdeveloped. Cohesive devices are used in a very limited and repetitive manner, such as 'As a result' and 'So'. The transition between the two paragraphs is abrupt, and the overall flow is hindered by the brevity of the text. To improve, you should aim to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure each paragraph develops a single, clear main idea.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for basic communication but lacks the range and precision expected for higher band scores. You rely on common, everyday phrases like 'doing gardening things' and 'taking care of child'. There is little attempt to use less common or more sophisticated vocabulary. Furthermore, there are minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'getting this kind of jobs' instead of 'obtaining these types of jobs'. To improve, focus on incorporating more precise terminology related to employment, socio-economic benefits, and personal responsibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response consists primarily of simple sentence structures. There is a lack of complex sentence forms, which are necessary to demonstrate grammatical range. Several grammatical errors are present, such as 'Many peoples are unemployed' (incorrect pluralization) and 'do not have degree' (missing article). Additionally, the phrase 'helps them to earn' lacks a clear subject in the second paragraph. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to demonstrate a lack of control over more complex grammatical structures. Increasing the variety of sentence types and proofreading for basic errors is essential.
