Should people do these things themselves?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Outsourcing the work to someone, to do stuff which you either do not wish to do or do not have time for is often possible for example household chores or baby sitting. Yes, it is a good source of creating jobs for others. Also the people who can afford should definitely hire someone to do it rather than doing it themselves. It does not only creates employment for people but also gives yourself a peace of mind.

Firstly, household chores and looking after children requires physical movements. People who work at corporate or runs business often come home late and exhausted. Additionally, they lack the motivation to cook or clean. Having a maid feels like having a new self to take care of what they do not want to prioritize while also maintaining their working standards. Apart from that, it also brings joy to someone else's house and wins bread for a family.

Secondly, when you're better at doing office work and the work which requires either good education or set of skills earned from years of experience, you often end up working overtime. By the time you reach home, you only have enough energy to eat and sleep. A good sleep is necessary to release the work-stress as well. Having a helper to help you do the cooking and cleaning in your house mitigates the stress of household chores. A maid makes you feel relaxed after you come home.

In conclusion, It is sometimes possible to hire someone to do things which you do not like, or you lack time to do. A working professional who works 10-12 hours a day should not cook and clean themselves and can hire someone who can look after their children while they're away and take care of the house as well.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the benefits of job creation and the question of whether people should perform these tasks themselves. However, the development is somewhat repetitive. The argument focuses heavily on the exhaustion of corporate workers, which limits the depth of the discussion. While the position is clear, the ideas could be extended further by considering the social implications or the potential loss of personal responsibility. The conclusion simply restates the introduction rather than synthesizing the arguments presented. To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph introduces a distinct, well-supported point rather than reiterating the same concept of 'exhaustion' multiple times.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical, and there are instances where the flow is slightly disjointed. For example, the transition between the benefits of hiring and the personal stress of the worker could be smoother. Referencing is generally clear, but some sentences feel like a list of points rather than a cohesive argument. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring better logical progression between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks sophistication. Phrases like 'do stuff' are too informal for an IELTS essay. While terms like 'mitigates' and 'prioritize' are used correctly, the range is somewhat limited. There is a reliance on repetitive phrasing, such as 'household chores' and 'looking after children'. To improve, you should aim for more precise collocations and a wider range of academic vocabulary. Avoid colloquialisms and try to use synonyms to express your ideas more effectively, which will demonstrate a better command of lexical variety.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'It does not only creates' (should be 'create') and 'People who work at corporate or runs business' (should be 'run businesses'). Subject-verb agreement errors are frequent, and there are minor punctuation issues. While these errors do not impede communication, they are persistent throughout the text. To achieve a higher band, you need to demonstrate more consistent control over complex structures and ensure that basic grammatical rules, such as verb conjugation and pluralization, are applied accurately.
