IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is sometimes possible to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do, or don't have time to do, for example, household chores or looking after children.

Is this a good way of providing work for others?

Should people do these things themselves?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this 21st century, what people focus on more is about having a peaceful time and happiness rather than making sacrifices. When we have an option of paying someone to do a task for us, why do we have to sacrifice our comfort and time to do something that we are not interested in doing?

I believe we have educated our girls to be independent but failed to teach our boys to deal with independent women. In addition to working outside, women are asked to look after their kids and do household chores. On the other hand men have fun after the office hours. I strongly disagree with this arrangement.

Gaining independence and having money should also provide freedom of choice, being that to hire someone to do domestic work at home or babysitting. This also adds to the economy by providing jobs to the unprivileged part of society to raise an income.

Moreover, the additional burden of manual labour after a hectic day in the office will also have negative impacts on a family. Any parent who is too tired to function cannot spend quality time with their kids and family.

Making lives easier with simple choices like these also have added advantage. People who have to pay for domestic help will try to cover that expense by trying to achieve more, that also adds to the development of the society and eventually the country.

People who can only do part-time jobs and cannot stay far from their families are the ones who takes up these jobs. This way they can utilize the time and also achieve an additional income.

To conclude, I would prefer having someone to do tasks for me that I find boring or tedious rather than doing it myself if my financial status allows me.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the economic benefits of hiring help and the personal aspect of doing chores oneself. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The argument regarding gender roles is a strong personal opinion but occupies a significant portion of the essay, slightly distracting from the core economic and practical questions posed. While you clearly state your position, some points, such as the claim that paying for help forces people to 'achieve more' to cover expenses, are asserted without sufficient explanation or logical expansion. To reach a higher band, ensure that every paragraph directly supports the prompt's specific questions with more detailed reasoning and illustrative examples.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central idea. You use some cohesive devices like 'In addition to,' 'Moreover,' and 'To conclude' to link your thoughts. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel abrupt. For instance, the jump from the gender equality argument to the economic impact of hiring help lacks a smooth bridge. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as the phrase 'being that to hire someone,' which disrupts the logical progression of the sentence. Improving the variety and precision of your linking words would enhance the overall flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'manual labour,' 'hectic day,' and 'financial status' appropriately. There are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'what people focus on more is about having a peaceful time' and 'unprivileged part of society,' which would be better expressed as 'underprivileged.' While you attempt to use more sophisticated vocabulary, some word choices are slightly imprecise. To improve, focus on collocations and ensuring that your vocabulary choices sound natural in an academic context rather than relying on slightly awkward phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('the ones who takes up these jobs') and awkward sentence construction ('making lives easier... also have added advantage'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they are frequent enough to limit the score. To achieve a higher band, focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with greater precision and fewer errors in articles and pluralization.
