IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is sometimes possible to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do, or don't have time to do, for example, household chores or looking after children.

Is this a good way of providing work for others?

Should people do these things themselves?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

This essay discusses if hiring people to do what one is not interested in is a way of employment for others or If one should simply do these roles by one self. In my opinion, I believe employing someone to do what you do not enjoy doing is still a form of employment and if money is not a problem, you should not be doing it by yourself.

In my own opinion, if there's something you hate to do, you can absolutely employ someone to do it for you! Outsourcing for others is much more fulfilling than forcing oneself to do what you do not want to do or generally don't have time for. For example, putting your kids at the day care is still you getting help from people. The fee you pay to have your toddler there is being used as salaries for the caregivers AKA nannies. It's a realistic way to keep them in business and a win for both sides.

Personally, if I have a responsibility I have to do but it's overwhelming due to my work I hire someone to do it, irrespective of whether I love to do it or not. For the sake of having more time, clarity and actually focusing on more important things, I won't be hard on myself to do everything on my own. I remember when I use to work from home, I barely have time for chores, my apartment is mostly unkempt until I outsourced my house keeping. I immediately got more time and sanity to work in a clean environment.

Overall, I'll emphasize that, providing work for others by them doing what one do not like to do is a perfect employment opportunity for anyone that fits that role, and no one should be do work themselves when they clearly do not want to.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the economic benefit of outsourcing and the personal perspective on whether one should perform these tasks themselves. The position is clear throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you provide a personal example regarding house cleaning, the discussion on the economic impact of hiring help is quite brief and relies on a single example of childcare. To reach a higher band, you should expand on the broader implications of this trend, such as the social impact or the potential for creating a service-based economy, rather than focusing primarily on personal convenience.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central focus. There is a progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'For example,' 'Personally,' and 'Overall,' to link your thoughts. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions could be more sophisticated. For instance, the connection between the childcare example and the broader economic argument could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some sentences feel slightly disjointed due to repetitive sentence structures.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'outsourcing,' 'fulfilling,' 'unkempt,' and 'sanity' appropriately. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, though some phrasing is slightly informal or imprecise, such as 'AKA nannies' or 'no one should be do work themselves.' While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Expanding your repertoire of collocations and avoiding informal abbreviations would significantly improve your lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you successfully use some complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'one do not like,' 'I barely have time,' 'I use to work') and verb forms. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors that occasionally interrupt the flow. To improve, focus on ensuring consistent tense usage and checking for subject-verb agreement, as these errors currently prevent the writing from reaching a higher level of accuracy.
