Should people do these things themselves?

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Nowadays, many people pay others to do household chores or look after their children because they are busy with work and other responsibilities. In my opinion, this can be a good way of providing employment for others, although people should still take responsibility for important tasks in their own lives.

Firstly, paying someone to do household work can create useful job opportunities. Many people earn their living by cleaning houses, cooking, gardening, or taking care of children. This can be especially helpful for people who are looking for flexible or part-time work. At the same time, hiring someone can save time for busy people. For example, a working couple may hire a cleaner once a week because they do not have enough time to clean their home after working long hours.

However, I believe people should do some things themselves. Household responsibilities are an important part of daily life, and doing them can help people become more independent. Parents, for example, should spend enough time with their children instead of depending completely on a babysitter. Children need attention and emotional support from their parents, which cannot always be provided by a paid worker. Similarly, people should learn basic tasks such as cooking, cleaning and doing laundry rather than relying on others for everything.

In conclusion, paying other people to do household chores or children is a positive way to provide employment and save time. However, people should not depend on these services completely and should continue to take responsibility for important duties themselves. I believe a balance between the two is the best approach.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt clearly. You have provided a balanced view by discussing the economic benefits of hiring help and the personal necessity of maintaining parental and domestic responsibilities. Your position is consistent throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, you could further develop your ideas by exploring the societal implications of outsourcing care, such as the potential impact on family dynamics or the professionalization of domestic labor. The ideas are relevant and well-supported, though they could be extended with more depth to demonstrate a more sophisticated level of critical thinking.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, such as the economic benefits of hiring help in the second paragraph and the importance of personal responsibility in the third. Cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'At the same time', 'However', and 'Similarly' are used effectively to guide the reader through your arguments. The progression of ideas is smooth and easy to follow. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall structure is coherent and well-managed.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases such as 'flexible or part-time work', 'emotional support', and 'relying on others' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is appropriate and clear, it is somewhat functional. To achieve a higher score, you could incorporate more sophisticated or less common collocations and idiomatic expressions, such as 'alleviate the burden of domestic chores' or 'foster independence'. The spelling is accurate throughout, and the word choice is consistently natural and appropriate for the context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use complex sentences effectively, for example, 'Parents, for example, should spend enough time with their children instead of depending completely on a babysitter.' Grammar is generally accurate, and punctuation is handled well. There are very few errors, and those that exist do not impede communication. To move into the higher bands, you could experiment with a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice constructions, to demonstrate greater flexibility and control.
