IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is sometimes possible to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do, or don't have time to do, for example, household chores or looking after children.

Is this a good way of providing work for others?

Should people do these things themselves?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Since people are more busy due to their work-life, they are hiring a maid or a person for child care for taking care of their daily household chores and looking after their children. While it is creating more jobs, there are still few things which can be done by themselves.

Nowadays, people are getting workaholic and do not have a time to do cleaning of their own home, that is why most of the house owners hire a professional cleaner to clean their home. In my perspective this trend is contributing towards our economy and generating more jobs in the market. For instance, if husband and wife both are working professional and do not get time to do their household chores, now there are plenty of workers available to do this type of job for them if they can afford. This is simply helping people who live under deprived by providing job to them which will not only help them but it will contribute to our overall economy as well.

On the other hand, I also believe that if something is doable by ourselves we should always do it by our own. To elaborate this, people who can not afford a maid or a child-care, they have to do it by their own in order to help themselves by saving that money which can be fruitful for them. Moreover, in my opinion, looking after our kids is something which should be done by ourselves as parenting is something which you can not buy with money.

Ultimately, while some things and chores of house can be done by a maid if people are busy in their life which is creating healthy economy for the world however, if the chores are manageable by our own, it should be done by ourselves.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the economic impact of outsourcing chores and the personal responsibility of performing them. The position is clear throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding the economy is repetitive, and the point about parenting is introduced but not deeply explored. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific examples or nuanced reasoning. For example, instead of just stating it helps the economy, you could explain how it allows professionals to focus on their careers, thereby increasing productivity. The response is balanced, but the depth of analysis remains at a general level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. You use cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'To elaborate this', and 'Moreover' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. For example, the use of 'in my opinion' and 'in my perspective' is a bit redundant. Additionally, some referencing is slightly awkward, such as 'people who live under deprived', which is grammatically unclear and affects the flow. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer back to their antecedents would enhance the overall cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some relevant topic-specific terms like 'workaholic', 'household chores', and 'professional cleaner'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and awkward collocations, such as 'people who live under deprived' and 'creating healthy economy'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your argument. To improve, focus on using more sophisticated collocations and ensuring that adjectives and nouns are used in their correct idiomatic contexts.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'people are more busy due to their work-life' (should be 'busier'), 'do not have a time' (should be 'do not have time'), and 'do it by our own' (should be 'do it ourselves'). These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your points. To achieve a higher score, you should aim for greater accuracy in subject-verb agreement and preposition usage, and try to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures with fewer errors.
