IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is sometimes possible to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do, or don't have time to do, for example, household chores or looking after children.

Is this a good way of providing work for others?

Should people do these things themselves?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Nowadays, people can pay others to do tasks that they do not have enough time to do not want to do, such as cleaning the house or looking after children. Although some people believe that individuals should handle these responsibilities themselves, I think hiring others can be positive way of creating employment and saving time.

On the one hand, there are several benefits to paying someone to do household work. Modern life is often very busy, and many people have demanding jobs and other responsibilities. For example, working parents may hire a cleaner or a babysitter so that they can spend more time with their children or concentrate on their careers. At the same time, this creates valuable employment opportunity for people who depend on domestic work for their income. Therefore, it can benefit both the employer and workers.

On the other hand, people should not become completely dependent on others for basic household responsibilities. Doing chores such as cooking, cleaning and taking care of children can help family members develop useful skills and maintain a closer relationship with each other. For instance, parents who regularly spend time with their children are more likely to understand their needs and provide emotional support. In addition, doing some tasks themselves can reduce unnecessary expenses.

In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with hiring someone when people are genuinely busy or need assistance. However, they should still take responsibility for important family duties and avoid replying entirely on paid workers. A sensible balance between doing things personally and getting professional help is the best approach.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed both parts of the prompt clearly, providing a balanced view on the benefits of outsourcing tasks and the importance of personal involvement. Your position is consistent throughout the essay. The ideas are relevant and supported with logical reasoning, such as the economic benefit of creating jobs versus the personal benefit of family bonding. To reach a higher band, you could further extend your arguments by providing more specific, real-world examples or exploring the potential social implications of outsourcing child-rearing in greater depth. Overall, the response is well-focused and directly answers the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices effectively, such as 'On the one hand', 'At the same time', and 'In addition', which help guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. However, the conclusion is incomplete, as it ends abruptly after 'In conclusion,'. This lack of a final sentence affects the overall flow and structure. To improve, ensure that every paragraph is fully developed and that your concluding summary is complete to provide a sense of closure to your argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'demanding jobs', 'valuable employment opportunity', and 'genuinely busy' are used correctly. You also show an awareness of collocation, such as 'maintain a closer relationship' and 'reduce unnecessary expenses'. While the vocabulary is accurate and appropriate for the task, it remains somewhat standard. To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated or less common lexical items, such as 'delegating responsibilities', 'socio-economic impact', or 'interpersonal dynamics', to demonstrate a more flexible and nuanced command of the language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control of grammar is generally strong. For example, the use of conditional structures and relative clauses is accurate. There is a minor error in the first paragraph ('positive way' should be 'a positive way') and a typo in the fourth paragraph ('replying' should be 'relying'). Despite these minor slips, your grammar does not impede communication. To improve, focus on ensuring consistent subject-verb agreement and proofreading for small typographical errors to ensure the majority of your sentences remain error-free.
