IELTS Writing Task 2 question
It is sometimes possible to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do, or don't have time to do, for example, household chores or looking after children.
Is this a good way of providing work for others?
Should people do these things themselves?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
It is often argued that people should sometimes hire somebody to perform household tasks, which they are not able to do due to insufficient time, such as household tasks or taking care of children. From my perspective, it is completely an effective approach to create employment opportunities for others. However, people should be encouraged to do things themselves in order to promote an independent lifestyle. In this essay, both contradictory views will be explained in the subsequent paragraphs.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response is significantly under the required 250-word minimum, containing only 78 words. Because the essay is incomplete, it fails to develop the ideas required to address the prompt fully. While the introduction sets up a clear position and acknowledges both sides of the argument, the lack of body paragraphs means the task is only partially addressed. To improve, you must expand on your arguments with specific examples and explanations for each viewpoint. The current length prevents a full exploration of the topic, which is a major limitation in meeting the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is too short to demonstrate a full range of cohesive devices or effective paragraphing. However, the sentences that are present are logically sequenced, and the introduction provides a clear roadmap for the essay. The use of cohesive devices like 'However' and 'In this essay' is appropriate and helps the flow of the text. To achieve a higher band, you need to write full body paragraphs that use linking words to connect ideas within and between paragraphs, ensuring a logical progression of thought throughout a complete essay.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is accurate and appropriate for the context, such as 'employment opportunities', 'independent lifestyle', and 'contradictory views'. While the range is limited due to the brevity of the text, there are no significant errors in word choice or spelling. To improve, you should aim to incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary and collocations related to the topic of labor and personal responsibility. Expanding the length of your writing will naturally allow you to demonstrate a wider and more flexible range of vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The grammar in the provided text is generally accurate, with a good grasp of complex sentence structures, such as the use of 'which they are not able to do due to...' and 'in order to promote...'. There are no major grammatical errors that impede communication. However, because the sample is so short, it is difficult to assess your ability to maintain this accuracy over a longer piece of writing. To improve, focus on maintaining this level of grammatical control while expanding your response to meet the word count requirement.
