IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is sometimes possible to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do, or don't have time to do, for example, household chores or looking after children.

Is this a good way of providing work for others?

Should people do these things themselves?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

In modern society, most people prefer to hire someone to perform the household tasks that they do not enjoy or do not have enough time to do, such as cleaning, gardening, and looking after children. In my opinion, hiring others to perform such tasks can be beneficial by providing employment opportunities for others. However, people ought to take responsibility for some important tasks themselves.

On the one hand, paying someone to accomplish their tasks can be very beneficial in creating employment opportunities. For instance, gardening, cleaning, looking after their juveniles, and caregivers can earn income by providing services to busy families. These kinds of jobs are of utmost necessity for those who have fewer employment chances and have flexible times to offer work. In addition, it is a very helpful approach for families with hectic schedules who do not have enough time to do their household tasks. Hiring someone to help with fulfilling chores can help them to reduce their stress and spend their precious time with their families and children.

On the other hand, I believe people should not completely depend on others. Some chores are personal responsibilities and teach valuable life skills. For example, children learn so many habits by watching their parents. They learn how to clean their room, prepare a basic meal and organize their belongings rather than expecting someone to do it for them. Similarly, parents should spend time caring for their children whenever possible because this helps to build strong family relationships.

From my perspective, sharing household responsibilities among family members can be very beneficial. However, during particularly busy periods, such as examinations or demanding work schedules, hiring someone to help with cleaning or childcare can make life easier.

In conclusion, paying others to perform household tasks is a useful way of creating jobs and helping busy people manage their time. Nevertheless, individuals should continue to perform important personal and family responsibilities themselves instead of becoming completely dependent on paid help.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt clearly. You have provided a balanced view, discussing the economic benefits of hiring help and the personal value of performing tasks oneself. Your position is consistent throughout the essay. The ideas are relevant and well-supported with logical examples, such as the mention of children learning life skills through observation. To reach a higher band, you could further extend the discussion on the 'employment opportunities' aspect by exploring the broader societal impact or the potential for professionalizing domestic work, which would add more depth to your argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'In addition,' and 'Nevertheless' to link your points effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the argument. The flow is smooth, and the relationship between ideas is consistently clear, meeting the requirements for a high band in this criterion.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the task. Phrases like 'hectic schedules,' 'utmost necessity,' and 'valuable life skills' show a good command of language. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'looking after their juveniles,' where 'juveniles' is not the most natural term in this context; 'children' or 'offspring' would be more suitable. However, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your ideas precisely, and there are no errors that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. The grammar is generally accurate, and most sentences are error-free. There are occasional minor slips, such as 'have flexible times to offer work,' which is slightly awkward phrasing. However, your control over complex structures is good, and punctuation is used correctly throughout. The errors present are non-systematic and do not interfere with the reader's understanding, which is consistent with the criteria for a high band.
