IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is sometimes possible to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do, or don't have time to do, for example, household chores or looking after children.

Is this a good way of providing work for others?

Should people do these things themselves?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

In recent years, paying other people to perform household chores, childcare and other unwanted tasks has become a subject of considerable debate. While some people believe that individuals should perform these responsibilities themselves, I strongly agree with the view that paying others to do such tasks is a beneficial way of creating employment and managing time more effectively. This essay will explain the main reasons for my position.

The primary reason why I agree with this view is that employing others to perform unwanted tasks can create valuable employment opportunities. This is because many people depend on domestic work, childcare and similar services as a source of income, particularly those who may have limited access to other types of employment. For example, a working family may employ a local person to clean their house or look after their children, providing that individual with a regular source of income. As a result, both parties can benefit, as the employer receives useful assistance while the worker earns a living. Therefore, it is evident that paying others to perform these tasks can be a practical way of supporting employment and the local economy.

Another significant reason is that outsourcing routine responsibilities allows people to use their time more efficiently. In other words, individuals with demanding jobs or family responsibilities can focus on more important activities while trained or experienced workers handle routine tasks. A good example of this can be seen in dual-income families, where both parents may work long hours and therefore hire a cleaner or childcare professional to manage some household responsibilities. Consequently, they can spend more quality time with their children, rest after work and concentrate on their professional responsibilities without becoming overwhelmed. This further demonstrates why people should have the freedom to pay others for tasks they do not have sufficient time or ability to complete themselves.

In conclusion, although the view that people should perform household chores and childcare themselves may have some merit, I believe that paying others to perform these tasks is a positive practice because it creates employment opportunities and allows people to manage their time more effectively. Therefore, individuals should be free to outsource such responsibilities when necessary, provided that workers are treated fairly and paid appropriately.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response fully addresses both parts of the prompt. You clearly state your position in the introduction and maintain it throughout the essay. Each body paragraph is well-developed with relevant examples, such as the mention of dual-income families and the economic benefits for service providers. You have balanced the two questions effectively, providing a logical justification for why outsourcing is beneficial while acknowledging the counter-argument in the conclusion. The ideas are extended and supported well, meeting the requirements for a high band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth. You use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'The primary reason,' 'In other words,' and 'Consequently,' which help guide the reader through your argument. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the structure of the introduction and conclusion frames the essay well. The use of referencing is clear, and the flow of information is natural throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the task. Phrases like 'subject of considerable debate,' 'demanding jobs,' and 'outsource routine responsibilities' show a good command of language. The vocabulary is precise and used accurately to convey your meaning. While the range is sufficient and flexible, it could be pushed further toward more sophisticated or academic collocations to reach the highest band, but the current level is strong and error-free in terms of word choice.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay displays a wide range of complex sentence structures, such as the use of conditional clauses and subordinate clauses (e.g., 'while some people believe that... I strongly agree'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and grammar is excellent. There are no significant errors that impede communication. The variety of structures used contributes to the overall fluency of the writing, and the grammatical accuracy is consistent throughout the entire response.
