IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is sometimes possible to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do, or don't have time to do, for example, household chores or looking after children.

Is this a good way of providing work for others?

Should people do these things themselves?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

It has become increasingly common for people to pay others for those tasks they dislike or do not have enough time to complete, such as household chores, preparing meals, or taking care for children. In my view, this is generally a positive development because it creates employment opportunities and allows people to use there time productively. Nevertheless, there are some responsibilities that people should not completely outsource.

Firstly, paying someone to carry out household or care-related tasks can provide valuable employment for people who need or prefer this type of work. Domestic cleaning, gardening, babysitting and elderly care are all legitimate that require time and effort. if demand for these services increases, more people can earn income, particularly those who may not have access to highly paid jobs.

Another important advantage is that outsourcing routine tasks can improve people's productivity and quality of life. Time is a limited resource, and there is little reason for someone with a demanding job to spend several hours every weekend doing chores if they can afford to pay another person to do them. The time saved could instead be spent exercising, studying, relaxing or spending meaningful time with. In this sense, paying for services is similar to buying other products: people exchange money for something that saves them time and effort.

However, I do not believe that people should completely outsource everything because they can afford to do so. Certain responsibilities, particularly those involving close family relationships, cannot be fully replaced by paid worker. Parents, for instance may reasonably hire a babysitter for their child while they are working, but should spend most of the time by themselves to raise their children and participate actively in their lives.

In conclusion, paying others to perform unwanted or time-consuming tasks is a beneficial way creating employment and making better use time. However, people should maintain responsibility for important personal and family time rather than attempting to outsource every aspect of their daily life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt clearly. You present a consistent position that outsourcing is positive for the economy and personal productivity, while correctly identifying the limitations regarding family responsibilities. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the distinction between routine chores and the necessity of parental involvement. To reach a higher band, ensure that all arguments are fully supported; for example, when mentioning 'legitimate' work, you could briefly explain why this contributes to social stability. Overall, the response is balanced and directly answers the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is smooth. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Nevertheless', 'Firstly', 'Another important advantage', and 'In conclusion' to link your points effectively. Referencing is generally clear, though there is a minor slip in the third paragraph ('spending meaningful time with' lacks an object). Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different aspects of the argument, contributing to a coherent flow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'limited resource', 'demanding job', and 'actively in their lives' are used effectively. There are some minor errors in word choice or collocation, such as 'taking care for children' (should be 'taking care of') and 'paid worker' (should be 'paid workers'). While the vocabulary is adequate and allows for flexibility, incorporating more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items would elevate the score. The errors present do not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are several error-free sentences, which is a positive indicator. However, there are some persistent grammatical slips, such as 'use there time' (should be 'their') and 'beneficial way creating' (should be 'beneficial way of creating'). Additionally, 'Parents, for instance may' requires a comma after 'instance'. While these errors are noticeable, they are non-systematic and do not cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, focus on proofreading for small articles and possessive pronoun consistency.
