IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is sometimes possible to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do, or don't have time to do, for example, household chores or looking after children.

Is this a good way of providing work for others?

Should people do these things themselves?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this modern era, people have very little time to do household tasks or to look after their children. In this essay, I will discuss both views on whether it is a better option to give somebody work or whether people have to do it on their own.

On the one hand, there is a majority of working professionals in our society who have very little time to do household chores in their daily schedule. So, hiring people to do such activities can take the burden off their shoulders to them and they can relax in their leisure time. For instance, people in big cities hire house help for daily routine activities and also to look after their children. By doing this, they can provide employment to the weaker sections of society.

On the other hand, if they do these things themselves, they can make a good bond with their family and children as well. But they have to make a compromise with their professional space, as they can't focus much on their work. Furthermore, by choosing this, they can spend plenty of time with their children by doing fun activities, and also they can manage their household tasks as well. For Example, in small towns where people have totally depended on farming can spend more time with their families, which ultimately creates good values in their children.

In conclusion, although it is about what type of preferences we have in our daily routine, if people have little time then they can arrange some house helps for such activities otherwise they can spent that time with their family and develop good morals in their children.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The essay addresses both parts of the prompt: the impact on employment and the personal choice of performing tasks oneself. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the argument regarding providing employment to 'weaker sections' is mentioned but not explored in depth. Similarly, the discussion on family bonding is a bit generic. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific examples or logical consequences for your points. Your position is clear throughout, but the overall depth of the response is limited, which aligns with the descriptors for a band 6.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. However, the transition between ideas within paragraphs could be smoother. Some sentences feel slightly disjointed, and the use of referencing could be more precise. For example, in the second paragraph, the phrase 'by choosing this' is a bit vague. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate for the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'modern era', 'working professionals', and 'leisure time'. However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive and lacks the precision required for higher bands. There are some minor collocation issues, such as 'make a compromise with their professional space' (which is unnatural) and 'arrange some house helps' (where 'hiring domestic help' would be more idiomatic). To improve, try to incorporate more topic-specific collocations and avoid overusing simple verbs like 'do' or 'make'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'take the burden off their shoulders to them' is redundant and grammatically incorrect. You also have issues with verb tense consistency, such as 'people have totally depended on farming can spend' (should be 'who depend on farming'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and refining complex sentence constructions.
