IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is sometimes possible to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do, or don't have time to do, for example, household chores or looking after children.

Is this a good way of providing work for others?

Should people do these things themselves?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, many people hire others to complete household tasks that they do not have enough time or do not want to do themselves. I believe this can be a good way of providing employment, although people should also take responsibility for some household duties themselves.

Firstly, paying people to perform household tasks can provide valuable employment opportunities. Many people earn a living by cleaning houses, gardening or looking after children. This allows them to earn an income and support themselves and their families. For example, a student may work as a babysitter in the evening while studying during the day. Therefore, hiring people for these tasks can help reduce unemployment and provide a source of income.

On the other hand, I believe that people should do some household tasks themselves. Doing simple chores such as cooking, cleaning and washing clothes can save money and make people more responsible. In addition, family members can share these duties and spend time together while completing them. However, people who have busy jobs or young children may not have enough time to manage all their household responsibilities. In such situations, paying someone for help can be a practical solution.

In conclusion, hiring people to complete household tasks is a good way of creating employment and can be useful for busy individuals. However, people should still try to complete basic household duties themselves whenever possible.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, discussing the benefits of employment and the personal value of doing chores. However, the essay is under the 250-word minimum requirement, which significantly limits the depth of development. While the ideas are relevant, they are somewhat brief and lack the detailed supporting examples or nuanced exploration expected at higher bands. The position is clear throughout, but the brevity prevents a fully developed argument. To improve, you should expand on your points with more specific examples or deeper analysis to meet the length requirement and provide a more comprehensive response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'On the other hand', 'In addition', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to link ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two main aspects of the prompt. The flow is smooth, and the relationship between sentences is generally clear, which demonstrates a good level of coherence and cohesion for this level.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate and appropriate for the task. You use functional terms like 'employment opportunities', 'household responsibilities', and 'practical solution' correctly. While the range is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the variety of less common or more sophisticated lexical items that would push the score into the higher bands. There are no significant errors in word choice or spelling, and the language is natural, though somewhat simple in its overall scope.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a good level of grammatical control. You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Many people earn a living by cleaning houses...' and 'In such situations, paying someone for help can be a practical solution.' The sentences are generally error-free, and punctuation is used correctly. While the range of complex structures is not particularly wide, the accuracy is high, and there are no errors that impede communication. This indicates a solid grasp of basic and intermediate grammatical forms.
