IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is sometimes possible to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do, or don't have time to do, for example, household chores or looking after children.

Is this a good way of providing work for others?

Should people do these things themselves?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Hiring someone to do daily household chores such as taking care of children is not advisable in my opinion. This essay will explain why people who pay somebody for the job they can easily do is giving away of money at some serious cost.

In this contemporary society where people have enormous work loads and deadline pressure, it is hard to find time for family and day to day errands. People hire professional cleaners and caregivers for looking after the children and cleaning houses. Some might think this a good way of boosting the morale of local business firms who rely on such small contracts, but in reality the cost is far more superior that they are paying.

Money is one of the major factor in this trend if we look at middle-class families. Specially in today's economy it is very hard to pay for such services. Caregivers, cleaners and Lawnmowers etc. charge average $300-$400 per day depending on the workload. Individuals may debate that money is no excuse for wealthy families who run business or work at high paying companies. But the important issue is far greater than money.

One of the substantial aspect of a happy family is giving time to each other. This includes taking care of the baby, making time to run errands. The result, it not only maintains a good relationship between parents and children but also creates a sense of respect among elders in a household. A happy household is an example of bright future for children.

Hope this essay might have changed your thoughts and gave a deeper meaning of living a happy family life in this busy modern era.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, but the development is somewhat limited. While you clearly state your position against hiring help, the arguments regarding the economic impact and the importance of family time are somewhat repetitive and lack depth. For instance, the point about 'boosting the morale of local business' is introduced but not fully explored or contrasted effectively with the personal benefits of doing chores. To reach a higher band, ensure that each body paragraph provides a more nuanced exploration of the prompt's two questions, perhaps by providing a concrete example of how outsourcing chores impacts family dynamics versus the economic necessity for some households.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'In this contemporary society' and 'One of the substantial aspect', to link your thoughts. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by awkward phrasing, such as 'The result, it not only maintains...', which makes the connection between sentences feel slightly mechanical. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that pronouns and references clearly point back to the intended subjects to improve the overall readability and logical flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'contemporary society', 'errands', and 'workload'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'cost is far more superior' (should be 'higher') and 'Money is one of the major factor' (should be 'factors'). Additionally, 'Lawnmowers' is used to refer to the person (a lawnmower is the machine), which is a lexical error. To achieve a higher score, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure that your word choices are contextually accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('Money is one of the major factor') and awkward sentence construction ('people who pay somebody for the job they can easily do is giving away of money'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence structure in the final paragraph is slightly informal and grammatically weak. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and refining your use of complex sentence structures to ensure they are error-free.
