IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is sometimes possible to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do, or don't have time to do, for example, household chores or looking after children.

Is this a good way of providing work for others?

Should people do these things themselves?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

These days, the vast majority of people pay someone for their household chores and to take care of their kids. While I agree that providing work to others can fulfill the needs of needy people. I do not say that it would always be accurate for those.

on the one hand, allowing any person to do work at their home may help them complete their financial needs and some other works like, they can also pay the tuition fees of their children. For example, if people in India hardly get a job according to their education and skills, in this way they get a chance to earn money to fulfill the domestic needs of their families. Add to it, it allows owners to spend some quality time with their children because if they spend more time in the kitchen, they can not give enough time to their family members. So it leads to social isolation for their kids, which has some bad effects on their growth.

Furthermore, by taking the service of the people at home, making them lazy and inactive because they are largly rely on staff. It means they do not like to do any kind of work in the kitchen, which leads to them getting bad illnesses. As a result, it makes them lethargic. Additionally, giving full care of their children to a caretaker makes their relationship weaker day by day. For example, if both parents are working in any organization and they do not have time to take care of their kids, it means they can not properly know the daily habits of their children and their choices of eating choices, which can reduce their bonding with them.

In conclusion, having discussed both sides of the viewpoint, I conclude that both ways are equally vital. It depends on the person whether they should go or not.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the benefits of providing work and the question of whether people should perform these tasks themselves. The position is clear, although the introduction is slightly weak in its phrasing. Ideas are relevant, such as the economic benefits for workers and the potential for social isolation or weakened family bonds. However, the development is somewhat uneven; the argument regarding the health effects of hiring help is a bit simplistic and could be better supported. Overall, the response covers all requirements of the task, though the depth of analysis could be improved to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'on the one hand', 'furthermore', and 'in conclusion', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'Add to it' and 'in this way they get a chance'. Referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall progression of ideas is logical, making the essay easy to follow despite some minor lapses in cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'lethargic' and 'social isolation'. However, there are also instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'fulfill the needs of needy people', 'making them lazy', and 'eating choices'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a limited range of vocabulary for more sophisticated expression. To improve, the student should focus on more natural collocations and varied synonyms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout, such as 'I do not say that it would always be accurate for those' and 'they are largly rely on staff'. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some issues with sentence boundaries and article usage. While the errors are frequent, they rarely impede the reader's understanding of the main points. The student demonstrates a basic control of grammar, but more attention to subject-verb agreement and sentence construction is needed to achieve a higher score.
