It is sometimes possible to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do, or don't have time to do, for example, household chores or looking after children.
Is this a good way of providing work for others?
Should people do these things themselves?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Nowadays, many people prefer to hire someone to perform their daily household tasks or take care of their children because they are tired or have busy lifestyles. Consequently, this creates more employment opportunities for others and provides them with a source of income. However, some people believe that individuals should manage their household responsibilities themselves. This essay will discuss the benefits of hiring someone to perform these tasks and the reasons why people should take care of them by themselves.
Hiring someone occasionally to perform household chores can be beneficial for families as well as society. Firstly, it provides local workers with a source of income and helps them become financially independent. For example, domestic workers can use their earnings to pay their children's school fees, purchase essential items and afford necessary healthcare and medication. Moreover, hiring someone to take care of children can be helpful for parents who need time for work or other important responsibilities. As a result, employing someone to complete household tasks can reduce the burden on busy parents and allow them to manage their time more effectively.
On the other hand, parents should take care of their children themselves whenever possible because this can help create a stronger bond between parents and children. Spending quality time together gives family members an opportunity to understand each other better and develop a closer relationship. For example, children who are raised primarily by their parents may develop a stronger emotional attachment to them and feel more comfortable sharing their interests, likes and dislikes. In contrast, parents who rely heavily on caregivers may have fewer opportunities to understand their children's daily experiences and interests.
In conclusion, hiring someone to perform household tasks or look after children can create employment opportunities and provide financial support to workers. However, parents should also make time to care for their children themselves because direct involvement plays an important role in developing a strong parent-child relationship. Therefore, I believe that hiring help occasionally is beneficial, but parents should remain actively involved in raising their children.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position on both the economic benefits of hiring help and the importance of parental involvement. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the distinction between the financial benefits for workers and the emotional benefits of direct parenting. The essay maintains a consistent stance throughout, and the conclusion effectively synthesizes the two sides of the argument. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more nuanced examples or explore the potential downsides of hiring help more deeply, such as the loss of personal autonomy or the potential for social inequality, to further extend the depth of the analysis.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'Consequently', 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'In contrast' are used effectively to link sentences and ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the transition between the two main viewpoints is handled well. The use of referencing is clear, and the overall structure is coherent, making the essay very easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The student uses a range of topic-specific terms such as 'financially independent', 'domestic workers', 'emotional attachment', and 'actively involved'. While the vocabulary is accurate and conveys the intended meaning clearly, it lacks some of the more sophisticated or idiomatic collocations that would characterize a higher band. The word choice is consistently natural, and there are no spelling or word-formation errors that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The essay demonstrates a good command of grammatical structures. There is a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as the use of conditional-like structures ('parents who rely heavily on caregivers may have...') and subordinate clauses. The grammar is generally accurate, with very few errors. Punctuation is used correctly throughout. The writing is fluent, and the control over sentence construction is consistent. To improve, the student could incorporate a wider variety of complex structures, such as passive voice or inverted sentences, to demonstrate greater grammatical flexibility.
