IELTS Writing Task 2 question
It is sometimes possible to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do, or don't have time to do, for example, household chores or looking after children.
Is this a good way of providing work for others?
Should people do these things themselves?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Nowadays, lots of people believe that they should hire people to do household chores or a nanny to take care of their children while others believe that they should work on things on their own. I firmly believe that we should do our day-to-day tasks on our own.
In my opinion, hiring someone to do tasks such as cleaning, cooking or taking care of a baby is waste of money. To elaborate, this can definitely spare a lot of time to work on ourselves and do other things in life that we love such as going out for a hike or reading a book but it is also very expensive and not many people cannot afford it.
Recently, there was a study conducted at University of Florida where people were invited to participate in a survey and they were asked if given a chance would they work on these household things or would they hire someone who would do all these work?. But surprisingly, the wealthy people were the only ones who chose to hire people to work on their chores and rest decided to do their own things by themselves. Moreover, working on things on our own can teach us a lot. For example, the other day, I bought a bed from IKEA which of course arrived in parts. Instead of hiring someone to build my bed, I took this as a task to learn something new and with 3 hours of total dedication I built it myself by just following an instruction manual.
To conclude, I firmly believe that we should do household chores on our own and take it as a challenge to learn something new instead to hiring someone.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed both parts of the prompt: the economic impact of hiring help and the personal value of doing tasks yourself. Your position is clear throughout. However, the development of the first part of the prompt—'Is this a good way of providing work for others?'—is somewhat limited. You focus primarily on the cost to the individual rather than the broader socio-economic implications of creating employment for service workers. To reach a higher band, ensure that both sides of the prompt are explored with equal depth. The example regarding the IKEA bed is relevant and effectively supports your argument for personal development.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'To elaborate,' 'Moreover,' and 'To conclude,' which help guide the reader. However, the transition between the economic argument and the personal anecdote could be smoother. Additionally, some sentences are slightly repetitive in structure. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would enhance the flow and coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'dedication' and 'instruction manual' appropriately. However, there are some instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'do all these work' (should be 'do all this work') and 'not many people cannot afford it' (a double negative that creates confusion). To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding redundant phrasing. Expanding your range to include more academic or topic-specific vocabulary would also help elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'is waste of money' (missing an article: 'a waste'), 'not many people cannot afford it' (incorrect negation), and 'instead to hiring' (should be 'instead of hiring'). These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement, correct preposition usage, and ensuring that your complex sentences are punctuated correctly.
