IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is sometimes possible to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do, or don't have time to do, for example, household chores or looking after children.

Is this a good way of providing work for others?

Should people do these things themselves?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the modern world, majority of the couples are working professionals and the families are also small sized where taking care of children is sometimes difficult because it is difficult to devote time to work and family at the same time.

So, in this case, people usually have to pay to some houseworker to keep the things in place so that their professional and personal does not get disturbed. While it is an expense for the members of families, it is actually creating income stream for unskilled workers. This helps in generating employment for other people.

Accordingly, this is a good way of providing jobs to others because it will help them earn money for their families.

On the other hand, while it is creating job opportunities for some others, few of the families are becoming lazy in doing their day to day personal activities as they are depending for regular household chores on someone else.

Sometimes this creates difficulties in doing regular duties including laundry and dish washing when the person who is employed is on leave some reasons.

For example- In 2020, during covid, I heard news of many film actresses were not even able to prepare their own food and have their laundry done on their own.

It is always good to have help in your house for regular day to day chores but need to always keep in mind that we might need to work on our own in case of emergency.

These are the important points which might give an overall insight into the above statements.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the economic benefit of hiring help and the personal necessity of self-reliance. However, the development is somewhat superficial. While you mention that hiring help creates an 'income stream for unskilled workers,' this point could be expanded with more depth regarding the socio-economic impact. Similarly, the argument for doing things oneself is supported by a personal anecdote about the pandemic, which is relevant but lacks a broader analytical perspective. The position is clear, but the overall development of ideas remains at a basic level, preventing a higher score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each focusing on one aspect of the prompt. There is a clear progression of ideas from the economic benefits to the potential downsides of dependency. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'In the modern world,' 'On the other hand,' 'Accordingly'). Some transitions between sentences feel abrupt, and the concluding paragraph is quite brief, failing to effectively summarize the main arguments or provide a final synthesis of the two viewpoints. Improving the variety of linking words would enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'professional and personal,' 'unskilled workers,' and 'employment.' However, the range is limited, and there are instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'keep the things in place' and 'have their laundry done on their own.' There is little evidence of less common or idiomatic vocabulary. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and academic synonyms to elevate the tone of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('the majority of the couples,' 'pay to some houseworker'), incorrect preposition usage, and awkward sentence construction ('many film actresses were not even able to prepare their own food and have their laundry done on their own'). Punctuation is mostly functional, but the sentence structure lacks the complexity and control required for a higher band. Focus on subject-verb agreement and article usage to improve accuracy.
