IELTS Writing Task 2 question
It is sometimes possible to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do, or don't have time to do, for example, household chores or looking after children.
Is this a good way of providing work for others?
Should people do these things themselves?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Nowadays, many people choose to pay others to do tasks that they do not have enough time or do not want to do, such as cleaning the house, cooking, or looking after children. Although this can provide employment opportunities for other people, I believe that individuals should also do some of these tasks themselves when possible.
On the one hand, paying other people to do household work can create useful job opportunities. Many people earn their living by working as cleaners, babysitters, gardeners, or domestic helpers. This is especially helpful for people who may not have high qualifications or many employment choices. In addition, hiring someone can save a lot of time for busy workers. For example, parents who work long hours may hire a babysitter to look after their children while they are at work. Therefore, paying for these services can benefit both the employer and the worker.
On the other hand, people should not depend completely on others for their daily responsibilities. Doing household chores can teach important skills and make people more independent. For example, young adults should learn how to cook, clean and take care of their own homes instead of always paying someone else. Furthermore, some family activities, such as looking after children, can help parents develop a stronger relationship with their children. Therefore, these responsibilities should not always be given to other people.
In conclusion, paying others to do household tasks is a good way of providing employment and can save people valuable time. However, I believe that people should do some responsibilities themselves, particularly when these tasks help them become independent and maintain good relationships with their families.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response fully addresses all parts of both direct questions in the prompt. The candidate takes a clear, well-supported position that paying others for household services provides valuable employment opportunities, while also arguing that individuals should perform certain tasks themselves to maintain independence and family relationships. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as mentioning specific jobs like cleaners and babysitters, and discussing the benefits of young adults learning basic home care. The progression of arguments is logical and directly answers the two-part prompt. This performance fully aligns with the Band 7 descriptor.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: an introduction, a body paragraph supporting employment generation, a counter-argument paragraph focusing on personal development, and a balanced conclusion. Cohesive devices are used effectively and appropriately, with transitional markers such as 'On the one hand', 'In addition', 'On the other hand', and 'Furthermore' guiding the reader smoothly through the argument. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, reflecting a well-structured framework that matches Band 7 criteria.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary with adequate flexibility and precision for the task. Phrases like 'employment opportunities', 'domestic helpers', 'depend completely on others', and 'maintain good relationships' demonstrate a clear command of everyday and semi-formal topic-related leccis. While there are a few attempts at less common vocabulary, the language leans slightly toward standard, predictable collocations rather than sophisticated or uncommon items, occasionally repeating words like 'tasks', 'people', and 'responsibilities'. Spelling and word choice are accurate throughout, ensuring easy communication. This fits comfortably into Band 6.5, rounded to 7.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The writer demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are frequent error-free sentences, such as 'Although this can provide employment opportunities for other people, I believe that individuals should also do some of these tasks themselves when possible.' Subordinate clauses, infinitive phrases, and modal verbs are deployed accurately. Punctuation is well-controlled, and grammatical errors are virtually absent, with the majority of sentences remaining structurally sound and completely clear. This level of accuracy and variety places the response at the upper end of Band 7.
