IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is sometimes possible to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do, or don't have time to do, for example, household chores or looking after children.

Is this a good way of providing work for others?

Should people do these things themselves?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Overtime, some people have had reasons to outsource for tasks that are time consuming such as homecare or the minding of little children. I strongly believe this is a reasonable way to provide job opportunities for others.

To begin with, people who have to engage multiple jobs so as to be able to care for their loved ones are left with little or no time to bond with the youngsters in the family. For instance a home in which the father and mother return at various times from their jobs, will be in need of care and cleaning. Some people have found this a very daunting task to achieve, hence the need to engage homecleaning services or people who can get it done for a fee, thereby providing job opportunities for others.

Additionally, there are certain tasks that people may not be able to do themselves. For instance, a nursing mother who has to return to her job after weaning her baby needs to employ the services of a child minder or a nanny trained to be able to take care of the young child while the mother is at work. Such services are usually paid for and in turn reduces the number of persons without a job.

Also some people who find online shopping very convenient will require the services of a delivery company to get those items to their doorstep and this is a task that they would not be able to accomplish on their own.

In summary, I strongly believe that there are certain tasks that some individuals will have to pay others to get done for them as a result of choice or time constraint and which will be of benefit to the persons who get to do the job.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: whether outsourcing tasks provides good work for others and whether people should do these things themselves. You state a clear position in the introduction that outsourcing is a reasonable way to provide job opportunities. The ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as nursing mothers employing nannies and working parents engaging cleaning services. However, the discussion leans more heavily towards explaining why people outsource rather than deeply analyzing whether people 'should' do these things themselves, which keeps the development at a Band 6.0 level. Overall, your main arguments are relevant, well-supported, and directly answer the two-part prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

Your essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with clear logical progression. You use standard cohesive devices to guide the reader through your arguments, such as 'To begin with', 'Additionally', 'Also', and 'In summary'. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each body paragraph focusing on a distinct reason or example. However, referencing and cohesive links are sometimes slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on 'For instance' and 'some people'. Despite these minor limitations, the logical flow is easy to follow and the text is clearly structured, satisfying the criteria for a Band 6.5.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully attempting less common lexical items such as 'time consuming', 'daunting task', 'nursing mother', and 'weaning her baby'. There are minor collocation issues, such as writing 'engage multiple jobs' instead of 'work multiple jobs' or 'outsource for tasks' instead of simply 'outsource tasks'. Spelling is generally accurate, and your word choices do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, you would need to use a wider range of sophisticated, less common vocabulary with greater precision and natural stylistic control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You successfully employ a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over relative clauses and conditional structures. For instance, sentences like 'For instance a home in which the father and mother return at various times from their jobs, will be in need of care and cleaning' show your ability to construct complex sentences, though it contains a minor punctuation error (missing comma after 'instance'). There are occasional grammatical errors, such as 'reduces' instead of 'reduce' in the phrase 'Such services are usually paid for and in turn reduces the number of persons without a job'. These errors rarely impede communication and fit comfortably within the Band 6 descriptor.
