Student answer (Band 6.0)

Paying others to do household chores or childcare is becoming more common these days. Although, it is a good way of providing employment opportunities, some people argue it might make others overly dependent on paid helps.

To begin with, various jobs such as babysitters, cleaners and caregivers can earn steady income it could be really useful for those who may have limited employment opportunities. Although, people are very indulged in their hectic schedule, they can still hire some help to save their time. This can allow them to focus more on their careers or other responsibilities. For instance, a full time working couple can hire a house help to do their chores. The cleaner gets money, while couple gets to concentrate on work.

On the other side, individuals should not avoid their responsibilities. Parents should spend time with children rather than completely relying on the babysitters. Moreover, this can bring the family together and strengthen their bond. For example, mother can cook a meal for their children while, father can help them with studies and they can spend quality time with each other. Thus, it is better not to depend entirely on help people should still do some things by themselves.

To put this in a nutshell, paying others to do the housework can be a employment opportunity and it is suitable to save individuals time. I believe that some of the family matters should be handled by themselves rather than using paid assistance if not necessary and there should be a balance between convenience and personal duty.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student addresses all parts of the task, discussing both whether paying others is a good way to provide employment and whether people should do these chores themselves. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are extended and supported, such as when the writer explains how a working couple can benefit from hiring a house help while the cleaner earns an income. However, some arguments, particularly in the conclusion and introduction, tend to generalise slightly, and the development could be pushed a bit further to reach the higher bands. For example, the mention of family bonding is relevant but brief. Overall, the response meets the requirements for a Band 6.5 to 7.0 by covering all prompts with relevant, supported ideas, aligning well with the Band 6.5 descriptor where all parts are addressed with relevant supporting examples.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with distinct sections for the introduction, body paragraphs addressing both sides of the argument, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well, as seen with transitional markers such as 'To begin with', 'On the other side', and 'To put this in a nutshell'. However, some cohesive elements feel a bit mechanical or repetitive, and referencing is occasionally slightly imprecise, such as 'help people' in the final paragraph. Paragraph unity is generally maintained, but transitions between sentences could sometimes be smoother. This level of organisation and logical sequencing fits comfortably within the Band 6.0 to 6.5 range, demonstrating a coherent overall arrangement with manageable cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting less common items such as 'employment opportunities', 'overly dependent', 'hectic schedule', and 'professional responsibilities'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing, such as 'paid helps' (should be 'paid help'), 'earn steady income it could be really useful' (run-on/punctuation issue affecting clarity), and 'help people' instead of 'helpers'. Spelling is generally accurate, but minor lexical slips prevent the vocabulary from reaching a higher band. The vocabulary used is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without impeding communication, matching the Band 6 descriptors where an adequate range is used with some inaccuracy and occasional word-choice errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional and participial structures like 'Although, it is a good way of providing employment opportunities...' and 'Parents should spend time with children rather than completely relying on the babysitters.' There are, however, several grammatical and punctuation errors present throughout the text. Examples include missing articles or incorrect pluralisation ('earn steady income it could be really useful'), incorrect comma placement ('Although, people are very indulged...'), and awkward prepositional usage ('on the other side' instead of 'on the other hand'). Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication. The control of grammar aligns with a Band 6.0 score, showing a mix of sentence structures alongside persistent errors in grammar and punctuation.
