Student answer (Band 6.0)

Paying others to do household chores or childcare is becoming more common these days. Although it is a good way of providing employment opportunities, some people argue it might make others overly dependent on paid help.

To begin with, various jobs such as babysitters, cleaners and caregivers can earn steady income it could be really useful for those who may have limited employment opportunities. Although people are very indulged in their hectic schedule, they can still hire some help to save their time. This can allow them to focus more on their careers or other responsibilities. For instance, a full-time working couple can hire a house help to do their chores. The cleaner gets money, while couple gets to concentrate on work.

On the other side, individuals should not avoid their responsibilities. Parents should spend time with the children rather than completely relying on the babysitters. Moreover, this can bring the family together and strengthen their bond. For example, mother can cook a meal for their children while, father can help them with studies and they can spend quality time with each other. Thus, it is better not to depend entirely on help people should still do some things by themselves.

To put this in a nutshell, paying others to do the housework can be a employment opportunity and it is suitable to save individuals time. I believe that some of the family matters should be handled by themselves rather than using paid assistance if not necessary and there should be a balance between convenience and personal duty.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the task: whether outsourcing chores provides work for others and whether people should do these things themselves. The student presents a clear position and supports ideas with relevant examples, such as a full-time working couple hiring a cleaner and parents spending quality time with children. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed, particularly the economic implications for employment, which keeps the response at a Band 6.0. The main arguments are logical, but greater depth of explanation would be required to reach higher bands. Nonetheless, all parts of the prompt are given due attention.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing separating the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'On the other side', and 'To put this in a nutshell' are used to structure the text, although some referencing and transitions feel slightly mechanical or formulaic. For instance, 'help people should still do some things' lacks a smooth conjunctive link. Progression is generally logical, moving from the benefits of employment and time-saving to the counter-argument regarding personal responsibility.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'employment opportunities', 'indulgently in their hectic schedule' (though slightly misused), and 'convenience and personal duty'. There are some awkward word choices and collocation errors, such as 'very indulged in their hectic schedule' instead of 'engrossed' or 'caught up', and 'help people' instead of 'paid assistance'. However, these vocabulary errors do not impede overall communication, placing the lexical resource securely at a Band 6.0 level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing conditional structures and subordinate clauses effectively (e.g., 'Although it is a good way of providing employment opportunities...'). There are some noticeable grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'earn steady income it could be really useful' (run-on sentence), 'cleaner gets money, while couple gets' (missing article), and 'mother can cook... while, father can help'. Despite these errors in punctuation and articles, communication is rarely impeded, and control is sufficient for a Band 6.0.
