IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is sometimes possible to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do, or don't have time to do, for example, household chores or looking after children.

Is this a good way of providing work for others?

Should people do these things themselves?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is an ongoing debate about whether people should hire someone to work for them or they should do their own work. Many people beleive that it is a good way to provide employment opportunities to others. Others, however, argue that people should do their own work

In today's fast paced environment, higher level society is busy to earn more money. They do not have time to do their household chores. As a result, an increasing number of people are becoming dependent on household helpers. This will help to provide job and source of income for middle and lower class people. For example, many of the celebrities are hiring nannies for their children. This would help to uplift lower class people with sufficient income

However, other argue that all should do their household chores by themselves. One of the significant reasons This is mainly because people can develop the feeling of belongingness while performing household work. For instance, if higher-income society contributes time toward the upbringing of their kids. This would help to build strong emotional connection between them.

From my perspective, people should hire others to perform household chores so that they can concentrate on more important jobs. This will help them to perform better in their professional life as well as help provide source of income to underpriviledged families.

Overall, although excessive dependence of domestic workers can create several problems, I believe that it will help to improve financial situation of others. Despite the fact that it will help to improve relationships among family, providing job opportunities are also important

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student addresses both parts of the prompt: whether hiring help provides good employment for others and whether people should perform these tasks themselves. A clear position is established and maintained throughout the essay. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as celebrities hiring nannies to support lower-class individuals and the emotional benefits of families spending time together. However, some arguments lack full extension, and the introduction cuts off abruptly at the end without fully completing the second question's paraphrase. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, fitting the criteria for Band 6.5, rounded to a 6.0 based on the descriptors for under-developed ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is divided into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs addressing each side of the prompt, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'For example', and 'From my perspective' are used to guide the reader through the text, although some transitions feel a bit mechanical. Paragraphing is generally appropriate, though the final sentence of the conclusion is slightly abrupt and repetitive in its phrasing ('providing job opportunities are also important'). Referencing is mostly clear, though some minor mechanical errors in cohesion prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. This performance aligns well with Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting some less common words and phrases such as 'ongoing debate', 'employment opportunities', 'belongingness', and 'underprivileged families'. However, there are notable lexical errors and inappropriate word choices, such as 'beleive' (spelling), 'higher level society' instead of 'wealthy people' or 'high-income earners', 'busy to earn' instead of 'busy earning', and 'underpriviledged' (spelling). Despite these inaccuracies, communication is not impeded, and the vocabulary is minimally sufficient. This corresponds to a Band 6.0 level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating conditional structures and subordinate clauses ('if higher-income society contributes time...'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors and punctuation lapses, such as missing periods at the ends of paragraphs one and two, sentence fragments ('One of the significant reasons This is mainly because...'), and awkward phrasing like 'other argue that all should do'. There are also article errors ('many of the celebrities'). While these errors do not severely impede communication, they occur regularly, placing the grammar at a Band 5.5 to 6.0 level. Band 6.0 is awarded as complex structures are attempted with mixed accuracy.
