Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The student addresses both parts of the prompt, discussing whether paying others for chores and childcare is a good way to provide work and whether people should do these things themselves. A clear position is established and maintained throughout the essay. The ideas are generally relevant, but some points lack full development and depth. For instance, the argument regarding reputation in the second paragraph is somewhat unclear and under-developed. Similarly, the exploration of whether people should do these things themselves touches upon career focus and time management, but could benefit from more detailed examples or broader extension to fully satisfy the higher band descriptors. Overall, the response meets the basic requirements of the task adequately, earning a Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a recognisable introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as the benefits of job creation and the personal choice of hiring help. However, cohesion at the sentence level is occasionally faulty or mechanical, with overused or simplistic transitional devices like 'Thus', 'Hence', and 'Consequently' appearing frequently at the start of sentences. Additionally, referencing is sometimes ambiguous, as seen in phrases like 'some masses' or abrupt shifts in pronouns. While the logical progression is generally understandable, the mechanical nature of the cohesive links restricts the score to a Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'multinational companies', 'household chores', and 'win-win situation'. However, there are noticeable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, the phrase 'job opportunity for some masses' is unnatural, and 'It is depend on individuals weather' contains both a grammatical and lexical error ('weather' instead of 'whether'). Attempts at less common vocabulary sometimes result in awkward phrasing. While communication is not impeded, the frequency of lexical inaccuracies places this performance firmly at Band 5.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though attempts at complex structures frequently contain errors. Examples of structural and grammatical inaccuracies include 'It is depend on individuals weather', 'If someone is busy in their work', and missing articles or pluralisation errors like 'multi-national companies' used with 'a'. Punctuation and sentence boundaries occasionally break down, leading to sentence fragments or run-on tendencies. Although the meaning remains mostly clear to the reader, the frequent presence of grammatical errors and limited control over complex structures prevent the student from reaching a higher band, resulting in a score of 5.0.
