It is sometimes possible to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do, or don't have time to do, for example, household chores or looking after children.

Is this a good way of providing work for others?

Should people do these things themselves?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In modern society, people often have extremely busy schedules, which makes it difficult for them to manage both their professional and domestic responsibilities. As a result, some choose to pay other people to perform household work or look after their children. Although I believe this can provide valuable employment opportunities, I also think that certain family responsibilities should be handled personally.

On the one hand, hiring people to perform domestic tasks can be beneficial for both employers and workers. People who work long hours may have very little time for cleaning, cooking, gardening or children. By paying someone else to perform these duties, they can use their limited free time for work, education or spending quality time with their family. Furthermore, this practice creates employment for people who earn their living by providing domestic service. For example, working parents may hire a babysitter or a cleaner, thereby creating a source of income for another person.

On the other hand, there are certain responsibilities that people should not completely delegate. In particular, parents should remain actively involved in bringing up their children. Although a busy babysitter can supervise a child while the parents are busy, emotional support, guidance and moral education primarily the duty of parents. Similarly, household chores can be shared among family members because they teach children important qualities such as responsibility, cooperation, and independence. Therefore, paying someone to do every domestic task may reduce family member involvement in their own household.

in conclusion, hiring people to perform home services can be a practical solution for those who have limited time, and it can also create employment opportunities. However, I believe that people should maintain personal belongings for crucial family matters, particularly childcare, instead of outsourcing them entirely.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You successfully discuss whether paying others for domestic help is a good way to provide work and whether people should handle these tasks themselves. Your position is clear throughout the essay, presented in the introduction and reinforced in the conclusion. Ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as working parents hiring babysitters or cleaners, and the role of household chores in teaching children responsibility and cooperation. The arguments are balanced, covering both the economic benefits of employment creation and the personal value of familial duties. There are no omissions or under-developed main points, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.5 to 8.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving smoothly from the introduction to the economic benefits in the second paragraph, the personal responsibilities in the third paragraph, and a concise conclusion. You make effective use of cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'Furthermore', and 'Therefore' to guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately. While referencing is generally clear, occasional minor mechanical transitions could be slightly more integrated to achieve a higher band, but overall the structure is solid and easy to follow, aligning well with Band 7.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow flexibility and precision, using less common items with general awareness of style and collocation, such as 'domestic responsibilities', 'employment opportunities', and 'delegate'. There are some successful word choices and collocations throughout the body paragraphs. However, there are a few minor vocabulary or proofreading slips, such as the missing verb in 'moral education primarily the duty of parents' and the incorrect phrase 'personal belongings for crucial family matters' in the conclusion where you likely meant 'personal involvement'. These occasional lexical inaccuracies keep the essay at a solid Band 6.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over grammatical structures such as conditional and concessive clauses (e.g., 'Although I believe this can provide valuable employment opportunities...', 'People who work long hours may have very little time...'). There are frequent error-free sentences, and punctuation is generally handled well. However, there are a few grammatical errors that persist, such as the missing auxiliary verb in 'moral education [is] primarily the duty of parents' and the lowercase 'in conclusion' at the start of the final paragraph. Because these errors do not impede communication, the writing firmly sits within the Band 6.5 to 7.0 range.
