Is this a good way of providing work for others?

Should people do these things themselves?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

In modern society, people often have busy lifestyles and may choose to pay others to do household chores or look after their children. While this can create employment opportunities, I believe that people should still take responsibility for important household duties whenever possible.

On the one hand, paying someone to perform household tasks can provide valuable employment for others. Many people earn their living by working as cleaners, gardeners, babysitters, or domestic helpers. This can be particularly beneficial for people who have limited qualifications or are looking for flexible employment. In addition, hiring someone can save time for busy workers, allowing them to concentrate on their jobs, education, or other responsibilities.

On the other hand, there are several reasons why people should do these tasks themselves. Firstly, household responsibilities can help family members become more independent and responsible. For example, children can learn useful skills by helping with cleaning and cooking. Secondly, parents should normally be involved in raising and caring for their children because spending time together helps strengthen family relationships. Finally, relying too heavily on paid workers may reduce people's ability to manage their own homes and daily lives.

In conclusion, paying others to do household chores can be a positive way of creating employment and saving time. However, people should not completely avoid their own responsibilities, especially when it comes to caring for their children and maintaining close family relationships. A balance between doing some tasks personally and hiring help when necessary is therefore the most practical approach.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response fully addresses all parts of the task. The student clearly tackles both direct questions: whether it is a good way of providing work for others and whether people should do these things themselves. A clear and well-maintained position is established in the introduction and reinforced throughout the body paragraphs. For example, the student acknowledges the positive employment aspects on the one hand, such as creating jobs for cleaners and gardeners, while balancing this with the personal responsibilities of independence and family relationships on the other. The ideas are adequately extended and supported with relevant examples like learning useful skills and strengthening family bonds, satisfying the Band 7 and approaching Band 8 criteria well.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

Coherence and cohesion are strong points in this response. The essay is logically organized with a clear overall progression from introduction to body paragraphs and a concise conclusion. The student makes effective use of cohesive markers such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'In addition', and 'Finally' to guide the reader smoothly through the arguments. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct central topic. Referencing throughout the text is clear, ensuring that ideas flow naturally without causing any confusion, which aligns solidly with the Band 8 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The writer demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary suitable for the task. Words and phrases such as 'employment opportunities', 'flexible employment', 'independent and responsible', and 'practical approach' are used accurately. There are attempts to incorporate less common lexical items, and word choice is generally appropriate. Spelling and word formation are accurate throughout the essay. While it does not consistently display the wide and sophisticated range required for a Band 8, the vocabulary used is sufficient for flexibility and precision, comfortably earning a Band 7.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response exhibits a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms. The writer successfully employs complex structures, such as concessive clauses ('While this can create employment opportunities, I believe that...') and conditional constructions. The majority of sentences are error-free, and grammatical control is well maintained throughout the essay. Punctuation is accurate, and punctuation errors are virtually non-existent. Although there is a slightly limited variety of truly advanced syntactic structures compared to a Band 8 level, the control over the structures attempted is commendable, warranting a solid Band 7.
