Should people do these things themselves?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Often, people don't have enough time to do household chores or look after babies, so they pay someone to do it. This is a controversial issue today. Some argue that everyone should do this work themselves. I strongly believe that individuals can hire a person who can take care of the home and children. This essay will explain why I support this perspective.

The primary reason for my opinion is that, in the meantime, women are ambitious in their careers. For instance, they want to be successful and independent; thus, they prefer a job. Simultaneously, balancing work and household responsibilities is quite difficult for them. It shows that if they hire, they feel relaxed, and their children do as well. If doing all by themselves, it is outweighed by them.

Another key argument is that they should do these things themselves. In many regions, jobs are not allowed for women, or they have to complete all work and then go to work. Instead of achieving her goal in life, she suffers from pressure and tension; she feels tired. This demonstrates that for a good and healthy life, everyone needs rest. Critics may challenge this argument, but the government should take action in this circumstance.

In conclusion, I firmly disagree that people should do things themselves because managing everything by one person is very difficult. Although they should try to give certain time to children. The benefits of doing the job are far more significant for the family; hence, each one should understand the feeling

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response addresses the task only partially. While the writer manages to touch upon both parts of the prompt—discussing whether hiring help provides work for others and whether people should do these tasks themselves—the position is not always clearly sustained throughout the essay. Some ideas remain limited and under-developed. For instance, the discussion around women being ambitious in their careers and the resulting need to hire help is introduced, but it lacks sufficient extension and concrete examples. Furthermore, the third paragraph introduces a conflicting argument about whether people should do these things themselves, which lacks clear integration into the writer's overarching stance. To improve, the writer needs to ensure that all parts of the prompt are fully addressed with well-extended, relevant ideas and a clear, consistent position from start to finish.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The essay displays some organization, but there is no clear overall progression throughout the text. Paragraphing is attempted, with distinct blocks of text representing introduction, body, and conclusion, but the logical flow between and within paragraphs is frequently disrupted. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often inadequate, inaccurate, or repetitive, such as the abrupt transitions between sentences like 'It shows that if they hire, they feel relaxed' and 'If doing all by themselves, it is outweighed by them.' Referencing is also occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the exact line of argument. To achieve a higher standard, the writer must ensure that ideas follow a logical sequence and that cohesive devices are used more naturally and accurately to link sentences and paragraphs smoothly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common expressions, such as 'controversial issue,' 'ambitious in their careers,' and 'pressure and tension,' but there are noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and word form that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. Examples include phrases like 'give certain time' instead of 'spend a certain amount of time' and 'each one should understand the feeling.' Spelling is generally acceptable, and minor slips do not completely impede communication, but the range remains basic and repetitive. To progress, the writer should focus on expanding their vocabulary range and improving precision in word choice and collocations to express ideas more naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on basic forms while attempts at complex sentences are often faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors that can cause difficulty for the reader, including issues with clause structures, prepositions, and verb forms. For example, expressions like 'If doing all by themselves, it is outweighed by them' and 'managing everything by one person' reveal a lack of control over grammatical patterns and voice. Punctuation is also erratic in places, particularly with run-on clauses and fragment sentences like 'he feels tired.' To move up to the next level, the writer needs to produce a greater variety of complex structures with improved accuracy, reducing the frequency of basic grammatical errors.
