Should people do these things themselves?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Very often do people pay money to others to do their tasks, such as household work and caring for their young ones. It can be seen as mode of providing employment. Although, it is more beneficial if people tackle these tasks themselves.

As individuals get occupied with errands and rigorous work, they are unable to do small tasks in their household. Especially, in a family where both parents work. For instance, cleaning the house, washing the dishes and looking after the young ones while parents are on work. In such circumstances, they hire someone who can do these duties for them in exhange for a monthly stipend. This can be seen as a source of employment for many unfortunate people in time of hardship. For example, in Asia it is quite normal to have maids, who do the cleaning, washing and cooking. Moreover, daycare system is present globally for families where both parents go to job.

Although, such helpers reduce the burden on families, these tasks help people stay physically active. Consequently, keeping them in good shape. Morever, performing chores together around the house helps family bond and develop a sense of connection. Parents who watch the children themselves can bond much more effectively and can keep the children under their vigilance.

To conclude, paying someone to do the chores for you can be seen as an effective way of achieving relief and providing employment to someone. However, if the circumstances allow a person to to do these duties himself, then he should do it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both whether paying for help provides employment and whether people should perform these tasks themselves. However, the development of ideas is uneven. While the employment aspect is briefly supported with examples like maids in Asia and daycares, the arguments regarding personal health and family bonding are somewhat generalised and underdeveloped. The writer maintains a clear position throughout the essay, concluding that delegation is useful for relief and employment, but self-reliance is preferable when circumstances allow. To reach a higher level, each main idea should be extended with more detailed explanations and fully elaborated supporting arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression from introduction to body paragraphs and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different facets of the prompt. However, cohesion is occasionally faulty or mechanical. For instance, starting a sentence with 'Although,' as a standalone conjunction and using repetitive transitions like 'For example' and 'Moreover' makes the flow somewhat predictable and disjointed in places. Referencing is generally clear, but mechanical linking prevents the text from achieving a smoother, more sophisticated logical progression. To improve, the writer should use a wider variety of advanced cohesive devices and ensure subordinate clauses are properly attached to main sentences rather than punctuated as fragments.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'monthly stipend,' 'vigilance,' and 'circumstances.' However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies that do not impede communication, such as 'young ones' instead of children, 'on work' instead of at work, and 'exhange' (a spelling error). The vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the intended meaning, but lacks the precision and stylistic flexibility seen at higher levels. To enhance lexical resource, the writer should focus on accurate word forms, natural collocations, and checking spelling carefully before submission.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including attempts at inverted structures like 'Very often do people pay money.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as article omissions ('as mode of providing employment' instead of as a mode), preposition misuse ('to do these duties himself, then he should do it' involving pronoun agreement and number shifts), and sentence fragments ('Although, it is more beneficial...'). Despite these errors, meaning is rarely impeded and communication remains clear. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to increase the proportion of error-free complex sentences and exercise greater control over articles, subject-verb agreement, and punctuation.
