Student answer (Band 6.0)

In contemporary society, people are so busy with their worklife that they do not have time or very little time to do domestic chores. With the increase in inflation, it is mendatory for both husband and wife to work to meet ends. However, somehow it is a good approach to hire a househelp, who look after their house and children in their absence. By providing work for others, they help them financially. This essay will analyze whether people should provide work to help them financially or do things themselves.

In recent years, it is very common in our society to hire a househelp for cleaning, driving, cooking, looking after a garden, doing the laundry and looking after the children. It is beneficial for a number of individuals who are illiterate and are not able to find jobs in reputable companies. It is convenient and common in elite class to hire a person who look after their domestic chores. For instance, in Pakistan it is very common to hire a maid, most probably a female belong to lower middle class. for cleaning and doing the dished and laundry irrespective of their class. The maid works in a number of different houses and fulfill basic necessities of her family.

On the other hand, there is a number of activities that a person should do himself. For instance, looking after a child is solely the parents responsibilty. It is a parents' duty to raise child. In addition, people should have the time to spend with the family, for example, invovling in any activity that keep them together as it strengthen the bond between member of the families. For instance, in Pakistan, especially mothers prefer to do all the things related to their children.

From my perspective, there is no harm to hire somebody because in a way or another people helping them to earn money and financially independant. However, people should not dependent on others for everything. They also try to take part in family activities that keep the family together.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both whether paying for domestic help provides good work for others and whether people should perform these tasks themselves. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For example, the discussion on providing financial help to illiterate or lower-middle-class individuals is relevant and supported with specific examples from Pakistan, such as hiring maids for cleaning and washing. On the other hand, the exploration of whether people should do things themselves is somewhat repetitive and less thoroughly extended. The writer takes a clear position throughout the essay, but the depth of development varies between paragraphs, which keeps the response at this level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion, and logical division into paragraphs. Information and ideas flow reasonably well, though cohesion can sometimes feel a bit mechanical or repetitive in its referencing. For instance, transitional phrases and pronouns like 'However', 'For instance', and 'In addition' are used to signal shifts between ideas, but referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the ambiguous pronoun use in 'help them financially' where the antecedent is slightly blurred. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate the introduction, body paragraphs on employment, body paragraphs on personal responsibility, and the conclusion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'contemporary society', 'domestic chores', and 'financially independent'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that do not impede communication. Examples of vocabulary errors include 'mendatory' instead of 'mandatory', 'househelp' written as a single unstandardized word, 'dished' instead of 'dishes', and awkward phrasing like 'elite class' missing an article. Despite these inaccuracies and occasional slips in word formation, the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the intended meaning throughout the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and introductory phrases. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, but they rarely impede communication. Examples of grammatical lapses include subject-verb agreement issues such as 'who look after' instead of 'who looks', missing articles like 'raise child' instead of 'raise a child', prepositional errors such as 'invovling in', and sentence fragments or awkward structures like 'There is no harm to hire somebody'. Despite these persistent errors, the sentence structures show sufficient variety, and many simple sentences remain clear and accurate.
