IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is sometimes possible to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do, or don't have time to do, for example, household chores or looking after children.

Is this a good way of providing work for others?

Should people do these things themselves?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is generally believed that those who can afford it can pay somebody to do their unfinished work at home or offices. Especially, when they do not have time. I personally think that this is also a reasonable way to provide people with employment. However, I also think that people should prefer to do their work by themselves, especially taking care of their children.

To begin with, people usually hire others to complete their work such as washing dishes, clothes and to clean their houses. In this way, they have to pay these hired people. So, it is a good way to provide jobs for so many people, especially in cities. As we all know that urban life is very busy, and this corporate ecosystem does not allow many to look after their kids, houses and gardens. Therefore, in order to maintain these household chores urban living style created an opportunity for those who are unskilled, and belonged to humble backgrounds. Thus, people from rural areas usually came to cities to get these jobs in different houses.

On the other hand, If someone is available to do their own work or they have enough time regardless of their economic condition, they should do their work by themselves. For example, If a one of the parents is free, he or she should take care of their children rather than hiring a maid for them. Because psychologists suggest that good parenting comes from giving time to their offspring especially when you are free at home.

To conclude, one can hire people for work like cleaning and washing. But taking care of children at home should be done by parents themselves.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: paying others for household work can provide employment, while parents should care for their children when they have time. You address both questions and give relevant support, including the example of urban workers hiring help and the point about children benefiting from parental attention. The response therefore covers the task well overall. However, the employment argument is more developed than the second question: the claim that people should do their own work when available is supported mainly by one parenting example, rather than considering other tasks or explaining the principle more fully. To strengthen the response, develop both sides to a similar depth and qualify broad claims with specific, realistic examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs and a conclusion. Signposts such as “To begin with,” “On the other hand” and “To conclude” make the main stages easy to follow, and the ideas generally progress from employment benefits to parental responsibility. Some connections are less smooth or precise, however. “Especially, when they do not have time” is an incomplete sentence, while “Therefore, in order to maintain these household chores urban living style created an opportunity” makes the relationship between busy urban life and employment difficult to follow. The conclusion also repeats the position without drawing the two arguments together. Use complete transitions and clearer links between cause, example and result to make cohesion more flexible.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the topic, including “employment,” “household chores,” “economic condition” and “parenting,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal or less common expressions, such as “corporate ecosystem” and “humble backgrounds.” However, some choices are inaccurate or unnatural in context: “unfinished work” does not clearly mean domestic tasks, “corporate ecosystem” is not an appropriate description of busy city life, and “maintain these household chores” is an awkward collocation. “Came to cities” also shifts into an unsuitable past-tense form for a general statement. Aim for precise, natural combinations such as “domestic responsibilities,” “urban work culture” and “carry out household tasks,” rather than using formal-sounding phrases that obscure meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “If someone is available to do their own work” and a relative clause in “people who can afford it.” The main ideas remain understandable, but errors in sentence boundaries, articles, agreement and punctuation prevent consistently accurate control. For example, “Especially, when they do not have time” is a fragment, and “As we all know that” incorrectly combines two clause patterns. “If a one of the parents” has an article error, while “urban living style created” lacks a suitable article and has awkward agreement with the intended general meaning. Capitalising “If” mid-sentence and the comma after “pay” also disrupt accuracy. Review clause construction and article use, then proofread punctuation and verb forms.
