IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is sometimes possible to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do, or don't have time to do, for example, household chores or looking after children.

Is this a good way of providing work for others?

Should people do these things themselves?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

In this busy world, people often pay others to do tasks that they can't do because of limited time, such as household chores and child care. I think this is a positive approach to creating employment choices for unemployed people. However, I believe, individuals should take their responsibilities and family duties.

To begin with, paying others for these services often creates employment opportunities for cleaners, babysitters, and cooks. They can earn a stable and fixed income for their families. This can be especially productive for those who don't have high qualifications or valuable professional experiences. Moreover, hiring someone to handle their domestic duties can give adequate time for focusing on their professional and career responsibilities. For instance, a working woman who works 9 to 5 pm may hire a cook who can reduce their workload of breakfast and dinner. Hence, hiring others for home-related tasks can help people to manage their personal and professional lives effectively.

However, individuals should take these responsibilities themselves. Firstly, this approach will provide them with adequate time to spend with their family while doing housework. In this manner, folks can strengthen their familial bonds. Secondly, involving children in household chores can make them responsible, disciplined, and independent. Additionally, children become more autonomous in actions that will be productive for them later in life. For example, parents should tell their kids to clean their dishes, make their bed and keep their clothes folded, which can teach them valuable life lessons. Thus, doing housework together can foster strong family relationships and teach kids an important life lesson.

To recapitulate, it is evident that hiring someone for these services often creates job opportunities and reduces people's workload. Nevertheless, individuals ought to take on responsibilities for their families to strengthen family relationships and teach their kids about responsibility.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address both questions and maintain a clear, balanced position: paid domestic help can create jobs and reduce workloads, but people should also take responsibility for family duties. The examples of a working woman hiring a cook and children doing chores support the main points, while the conclusion restates your view. This meets the task well. To develop the response further, explain more precisely how paid domestic work benefits workers beyond providing income, and qualify the claim that people should do these tasks themselves—for example, by distinguishing essential family involvement from chores that can reasonably be outsourced. Some claims, such as the effect on family bonds, are asserted rather than explored, so fuller explanation would make the argument more convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear four-part structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two sides, and a conclusion. Progression is easy to follow, and signposts such as “To begin with,” “However,” and “To recapitulate” make the organisation explicit. Within paragraphs, ideas generally move from a claim to an explanation or example. At times, however, the linking is somewhat formulaic, and the second body paragraph repeats the idea of family relationships in both its opening and closing sentences. The example about a working woman also shifts from “a working woman” to “their workload,” which makes the reference less clear. Vary sentence openings and use more precise links between claims and examples to make cohesion feel more natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for the topic, including “employment opportunities,” “professional responsibilities,” “familial bonds,” and “autonomous.” These choices show some flexibility and help express both economic and family-related ideas. There are also occasional imprecise or unnatural collocations that keep the vocabulary from being consistently precise: “employment choices” is less natural than “employment opportunities,” and “valuable professional experiences” does not clearly convey the intended point about qualifications or skills. “Take their responsibilities” is also an awkward phrase. Aim for natural collocations and avoid using formal-sounding words where a simpler, more exact expression would be clearer. The meaning remains understandable throughout.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You use a range of sentence forms, including complex clauses with “while,” “who,” and “which,” and many sentences are controlled and easy to understand. For example, “Involving children in household chores can make them responsible, disciplined, and independent” is grammatically clear. A few errors persist in agreement and reference: “a working woman … may hire a cook who can reduce their workload” has an unclear pronoun, and “which can teach them valuable life lessons” has an uncertain reference to the preceding list of chores. The phrase “individuals should take their responsibilities” also needs a different grammatical construction, such as “take responsibility for their duties.” Check pronoun agreement and ensure relative clauses clearly refer to the intended noun.
