IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is sometimes possible to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do, or don't have time to do, for example, household chores or looking after children.

Is this a good way of providing work for others?

Should people do these things themselves?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, it is common practice to hire cooks or nannies to take care of children or to complete household chores. It is a subjective topic and mainly depends on circumstances of individuals.

One may argue that it is a great way to create jobs. The phenomenon of working parents has developed over time. This has created the need for house help. It is a full-time job, which varies from full-time to part-time depending on people's situation.

Couples who are both working generally come back late-evening time and sometimes need time to relax and unwind. Thus, the requirement of house help who can support by taking care of the children, preparing meals, and cleaning up the home during the day. This has become an essential need for individuals. One major concern is the reliance placed on these workers. There have been instances of negligence or theft, which have to be taken into account, and proper due diligence is required before hiring them.

There is a counterargument that individuals should perform their tasks themselves rather than putting trust in strangers. Especially for sensitive tasks, such as taking care of children. However, with how the world has moved on, there is a stronger emphasis on mental exhaustion. It is virtually impossible for employed parents to survive without house help. For instance, my wife is able to take care of our kids because she is currently unemployed, and we would be in the same boat if she landed a job.

As I explained above, this is a very unique topic with many facets to cover, and there is no one right answer.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both questions by explaining that hiring domestic help can create employment and that people may also do these tasks themselves, particularly when children are involved. Your position is broadly that the choice depends on circumstances, and the example about your wife gives the discussion a personal, relevant illustration. However, the answer to whether this is a good way of providing work is mostly asserted rather than evaluated: the point that it is a “full-time job” is not developed with wider benefits or limitations. The counterargument about trusting strangers is also brief, and the conclusion repeats that there is “no one right answer” without clearly weighing the two sides. Develop each main idea with a specific explanation and state your own overall view more decisively.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, discussion of employment and household needs, a counterargument, and a concluding paragraph. Linking expressions such as “Thus,” “However,” and “For instance” help signal relationships between ideas. Nevertheless, progression is uneven. The paragraph beginning “Couples who are both working” moves from their schedules to the need for help, then abruptly introduces concerns about negligence and theft. The sentence “Thus, the requirement of house help…” is also a fragment, which interrupts the flow. The final paragraph announces that the topic has many facets but does not synthesise the preceding points. Group related ideas together, use complete sentences, and make the conclusion directly follow from your argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “household chores,” “mental exhaustion,” “negligence,” “due diligence,” and “reliance.” These choices allow you to discuss both practical needs and possible risks, and the meaning is generally clear. Some expressions are less natural or precise, such as “working parents has developed over time,” “late-evening time,” and “support by taking care of the children.” “Unique topic with many facets to cover” is also vague in this context. Aim for more natural collocations and precise wording, especially when explaining cause and effect. For example, describe the growth in dual-income households rather than the “phenomenon of working parents,” and specify what kind of support domestic workers provide.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex forms, including relative clauses (“which varies from full-time to part-time”) and a contrast structure beginning “There is a counterargument that…”. Most sentences communicate their intended meaning, but some grammatical errors and incomplete constructions remain. “The phenomenon of working parents has developed over time” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “Thus, the requirement of house help who can support…” is not a complete sentence. In “Couples … come back late-evening time,” the sentence structure is awkward, and “we would be in the same boat if she landed a job” shows an attempt at a conditional form. Check agreement and ensure each sentence has a complete main clause. More accurate complex sentences would make the reasoning easier to follow.
