IELTS Writing Task 2 question
It is sometimes possible to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do, or don't have time to do, for example, household chores or looking after children.
Is this a good way of providing work for others?
Should people do these things themselves?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
In modren life many people pay others to do tasks they dislike or lack time for such as cleaning cooking or babysitting. While this creates employment, I believe people should still do some of these tasks themselves.
Paying for domestic help is undoubtedly a good way to provide work. In many countries including Pakistan millions of people depend on such jobs for their livelihood. For example, a working mother who hires a maid not only gets help but also supports another family financially. Furthermore professional services like day care centres create formal employment with better skills and income. This system benefits both sides and boosts the economy.
However outsourcing everything is not ideal. Firstly, doning household chores teaches responsbility and life skills. Children who help at home learn decipline and respect for work. If parents always pay someone else, they miss the chance to be a role model for their children.
Sencondly, looking after children is a personal responsibility. A babysitter can provide care, but connot replace a parent's love and attention. Relying too much on thers can weaken family bonds and create emotional distance.
In my opinion, a balance is necessary. Busy professionals can pay for heavy cleaning or occasional childcare, which is paractical and creates jobs. But daily chores and spending quality time with children should be done personally.
To conclusion, although paying others for domestic work is a useful source of employment people should not completely avoid these tasks. Doing some chores themselves helps maintain family values and personal skills

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address both questions and maintain a clear position: paying for help can create useful employment, but people should still do some tasks themselves. The examples of a working mother hiring a maid and day-care centres support the employment argument, while the points about children learning responsibility and parental care explain your reservations. This range of relevant support and a consistent conclusion fit the task well. To strengthen the response further, develop some claims more specifically: for instance, explain how paid domestic work improves workers’ opportunities or give a concrete example of how families can balance childcare and employment. The point about children learning discipline is relevant but could be linked more explicitly to why doing chores personally matters to adults as well.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph supporting paid help, a paragraph explaining its limits, and a balanced conclusion. Sequencing phrases such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “In my opinion” make the progression easy to follow, and the contrast between benefits and drawbacks is clear. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some features of more flexible progression. However, the linking can feel mechanical because several points are introduced with formulaic markers, and the final paragraph repeats the central position rather than drawing the arguments together in a more developed way. Improve cohesion by varying transitions and using clearer references between ideas, while ensuring the conclusion follows smoothly from the examples.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “livelihood,” “formal employment,” “responsibility,” “emotional distance,” and “quality time.” These choices help communicate the main arguments, and the meaning remains clear despite some inaccurate forms and spelling. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “boosts the economy” and “family bonds.” To improve, focus on accurate spelling and natural collocations: errors such as “modren,” “doning,” “decipline,” and “paractical” are noticeable, while “pay others to do tasks” could be expressed more precisely as “hire people to carry out household tasks.” Greater consistency in word form and more precise phrasing would make the vocabulary more controlled and flexible.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the concession in “While this creates employment…” and the conditional sentence beginning “If parents always pay someone else…”. Most ideas are understandable, and the errors do not generally obstruct communication. Some grammatical control is still uneven, particularly in sentence boundaries and punctuation: the opening list would be clearer with commas, and the final sentence needs punctuation and a more natural concluding construction. The sentence “Paying for domestic help is undoubtedly a good way to provide work” is clear, while longer sentences could be checked carefully for complete, well-punctuated structures. Continue practising complex sentences, but prioritise accuracy in punctuation and sentence construction.
