IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is sometimes possible to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do, or don't have time to do, for example, household chores or looking after children.

Is this a good way of providing work for others?

Should people do these things themselves?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, people like to pay somebody to do things they do not want to do, or do not have time to do, for example, household chores or looking after children. I believe, this is a great way of providing work for others. Although, some people would like to do these things themselves which I also consider completely fine.

Firstly, I would like to explain if someone can afford a maid at home and save themselves some time then this will make them more productive as well as more efficient in their professional life. In addition, you become bread and butter of someone's life which gives a sense of satisfaction. For example, a maid for household chores, a drycleaner for washing your clothes, and a chef to cook for you, would save you ample time to work and excel professionally.

Secondly, looking after children is a very big responsibility that requires your time and effort. Some people prefer to do it themselves because of the emotional bond with their children, while some people prefer nurseries for their children so they can balance their professional and personal life. It is all about the personal preferences and choices. I hold the opinion that everyone should at least know how to deal with household chores in case of emergency if they had to do it themselves. Otherwise, having a person to work for you is completely fine.

In conclusion, I would appreciate people to save time and excel in professional life and live for a bigger cause. Meanwhile, maintaining a balance between professional and personal life would be an ideal situation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both questions and make your position clear: you see paid help as a useful source of employment, while accepting that some people prefer to manage chores or childcare themselves. The examples of a maid, dry cleaner and chef support the time-saving argument, and the discussion of nurseries recognises the personal and professional considerations involved in childcare. However, the benefits of providing work for others are asserted more than explained, and the point about knowing how to do chores in an emergency is not developed. The conclusion also introduces “a bigger cause” without clarifying what this means. Develop these ideas with clearer reasoning and a specific example to make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. “Firstly,” “Secondly” and “In conclusion” make the main stages easy to follow, and the second body paragraph moves from childcare choices to your view about household skills. Some connections are nevertheless mechanical, and the first paragraph’s examples are listed rather than linked explicitly to the argument. The shift from paid help to “a bigger cause” in the conclusion is also unclear, so the ending does not fully follow from the preceding points. Use more precise links between claims and examples, and make sure each paragraph develops one central idea in a clear sequence.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the topic, including “productive,” “professional life,” “emotional bond” and “balance,” which helps communicate your main ideas. There are also attempts at less common expressions, but some are inaccurate or unnatural: “you become bread and butter of someone's life” does not express the intended idea, and “ample time” is an awkward fit here. “Drycleaner” and “chef” add relevant detail, though the examples could be expressed more precisely. Aim for natural collocations and choose wording that states your meaning directly; for instance, explain that paid workers earn a living and that their help frees up time. This would make your vocabulary more precise without requiring unnecessarily complex words.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including conditional clauses such as “if someone can afford a maid … then this will make them more productive” and a contrast between people who prefer different childcare arrangements. Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical and punctuation errors remain. In the opening, “I believe, this is” has an unnecessary comma; “Although” is incorrectly used to begin the next sentence as a standalone connector. The phrase “if they had to do it themselves” also shifts into a past form despite the general present-time meaning. Review punctuation around introductory phrases and conjunctions, and keep verb forms consistent when expressing general situations. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen control.
