Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear,
I am writing to inform you about my stay in the apartment could exceed upto six months as we agreed on the stay for five months.
I want to stay in the apartment for at least 9 months because of my university project.I have to submit it by the end of the month of december this year and research is based in my area I am living. My research long for 6 to 8 hours a day so it is difficult for me to shift to another place in the middle of the assignment. So I am planning to live for 5 months more than we agreed on the contract.
I would like to grab your attention at some concerning issue in my appartment. The basin in the kitchen has pipe has a leakage from several places and the water overflow to my living room.If you could contact the plumber and resolve this issue for me i would be grateful.
Looking forward to hear from you soon.
Yours faithfully,
Fareah.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three required points: you request a longer stay, explain that your university research is based locally and difficult to interrupt, and report a leaking kitchen basin pipe. The request for “at least 9 months” gives the owner a clear indication of your intended rental period, and the repair request is polite. This fully covers the main task, while some details are not yet fully clear: “could exceed upto six months” conflicts with the later request for nine months, and “five months more than we agreed” does not clearly distinguish the total rental period from the extension. Clarify the exact end date or total duration, and develop the reason for the changed plans more precisely to make the letter fully unambiguous.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a sensible overall order: you introduce the purpose, explain the extension, raise the maintenance problem, and close politely. Paragraphing helps separate the main points, and phrases such as “because of” and “So” show how your reasons connect. However, some links are mechanical or unclear. The opening sentence combines the original agreement and the new request in a confusing way, while the research explanation runs together without clear punctuation. The shift from the rental request to the repair issue is understandable, but a clearer paragraph transition would help. Use shorter, more clearly connected sentences and make references such as “it” and “this issue” unmistakable.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the situation, including “university project,” “research,” “contract,” “basin,” “leakage,” and “plumber,” so the reader can understand the main message. There are also some appropriate polite expressions, such as “I would be grateful” and “Looking forward to hear from you soon.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “grab your attention at some concerning issue,” “research long for 6 to 8 hours,” and “the water overflow to my living room.” Spelling is also inconsistent in “appartment.” Choose more natural phrases for reporting a problem and describing your research schedule, and check spelling and word forms before sending the letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, for example, the explanation beginning “because of my university project” and the conditional request “If you could contact the plumber…”. The main ideas are generally recoverable, but some grammatical errors make parts of the letter difficult to follow. In “the basin in the kitchen has pipe has a leakage,” the sentence structure and article use are faulty; “the water overflow” also needs a suitable verb form. The opening sentence has an unclear construction, and “Looking forward to hear” uses the wrong verb pattern. Improve control of articles, subject–verb agreement, verb forms, and sentence boundaries. A careful edit of these patterns would make your meaning clearer while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
