Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mr.Patel,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to request your assistance regarding my stay in the apartment.I would like to explain my situtation and hoping for your help.
To begin with, I would like to provide some background information for this matter. Five months ago, I rented this apartment for six months. However, the situation has changed now and I want to live more than six months. If you can provide me this accommodation to rent for next year, I will appreciate that.
I want to highlight that, my comapny is offering me an additional contract for one year. As a concequence of this, I can not go back to my city.
In light of this circumstances, I would appreciate if you could land me the apartment foe one more year. I would also be grateful if you could fix the plumbing issue.
I hope you will look into this matter and take necessary action at your earliest convenience. I look forward to receiving your response.
Yours faithfully,
Shivani Panchal

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three required points: you request a further year, explain that your company has offered an additional one-year contract, and mention a plumbing problem. The purpose is clear and the tone is appropriately polite. The request is repeated in “rent for next year” and “one more year,” but the exact extension could be stated once and more precisely—for example, whether you wish to stay for a full year after the current agreement ends. The plumbing issue is only briefly identified; explaining what is wrong or how it affects you would develop this point. These details would make the letter more fully supported and complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a recognisable progression from the request, to background and changed plans, then to the apartment problem and a closing. Paragraphing helps separate these functions, and phrases such as “However” and “In light of this” guide the reader. Some linking is mechanical or repetitive: “I would like to” and “I would appreciate” recur, while “To begin with” introduces background without a clear need. The opening also combines several purposes in one paragraph, and punctuation spacing makes some sentences run together. Use more direct transitions and ensure each paragraph has a distinct focus to make the progression smoother and cohesion less noticeable.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a suitable range of formal letter language, including “request your assistance,” “additional contract,” and “I look forward to receiving your response.” However, several spelling errors and inaccurate word choices reduce precision: “situtation,” “comapny,” and “concequence” are misspelled, while “land me the apartment” does not express the intended request naturally. “Provide me this accommodation to rent” is also awkward, and “plumbing issue” is too general to convey the problem clearly. These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your main message, but careful proofreading and more natural collocations would improve control and make the letter sound more fluent.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple sentences and more complex forms, such as “If you can provide me this accommodation to rent for next year, I will appreciate that.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors persist. For example, “I would like to explain my situation and hoping for your help” shifts from an infinitive to an -ing form; use “and hope for your help.” In “I would appreciate if you could,” the clause needs “it” after “appreciate.” There are also punctuation and spacing problems, such as “apartment.I” and “six months.However.” Review sentence boundaries and maintain parallel verb forms. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen the letter.
