IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.

Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter

  • say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
  • explain why your plans have changed
  • tell the owner about a problem in the apartment

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear ,

Sonam sir

I hope you are doing well, the reason i am writing this letter is that fortunately i have very pleasent experience in your apartment and now our six months agreement has been finished. However i am interested to stay more then our original agreement. I want to live more six months in your apartment due to my extension in college.

I took six months program here but now they are offering some internship as well for six moths this is why i have to stay here longer then my initial plan.

I have really good experience with your apartment as it located near public transport and groceries shops. Nevertheless there is some issue i have faced here. In leaving room there is too much extra stuff that may be yours. Apart from this washroom shink often lock and we face problem to run water. Fridge and stoves in the kitchen are quiet old. I hope you keep in mind these issues and give me permission to stay here more.

Thank you

Naznin

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: stating the desired length of the extension, explaining the change in plans due to an internship, and identifying maintenance issues. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a landlord. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For example, the explanation regarding the internship could be more clearly linked to the request for an extension. Additionally, the maintenance issues are listed rather than described in a way that suggests a formal request for repair. To improve, ensure each point is fully elaborated to demonstrate a clear purpose.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some cohesive devices like 'However', 'Nevertheless', and 'Apart from this' to connect ideas. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing and punctuation errors, such as the missing salutation name and the run-on sentences in the first paragraph. The transition between the request for an extension and the list of problems is a bit abrupt. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring consistent paragraph structure will help your writing appear more professional and cohesive.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your message clearly, such as 'agreement', 'extension', 'internship', and 'maintenance'. However, there are several instances of word-choice errors and awkward collocations, such as 'washroom shink often lock' (sink often gets blocked) and 'run water' (have running water). Some phrasing is repetitive, and the use of 'quiet' instead of 'quite' is a common spelling error. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring that your vocabulary is used accurately in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'I have very pleasent experience' (missing article 'a'), 'stay more then' (should be 'than'), and 'it located' (should be 'it is located'). Subject-verb agreement and article usage are areas that need attention. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your request, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency of the letter. Focus on proofreading for basic tense and article consistency.
