Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Eric,
Hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to request you to extend the lease for 2 more year or year-on-year agreement whichever suits you well. Our initial agreement of six months, supposed to be finished next month so I wish to confirm my extension before that.
As you know my original visa status was visitor before, which had the validity to stay for 6 months. Because of that reason I asked you to make 6 months deed only but recently it has been upgraded to permanent residence so I can stay longer. Additionally, my daughter is also in between her session of grade 1, in a school close to our house which is very convenient for us. so my family decided to stay here for long term until my daughter going to finish her academic year.
However, you just renovate this apartment couple of months before but there is a frequent issue in the tub of master bedroom's washroom. While taking a full tub bath I noticed minor leakage from the base of tub. I tried to fixed it through some adhesives available in Canadian Tires but unfortunately, it could not work.
I request you to please extend the lease for at least 1 year and please try to fix the plumbing issue in washroom. Your apartment is a wonderful place to stay longer. I wish to stay here.
Please let me know if any additional documents required, I would either send you through email or submit hard copy to your office.
Thanks and regards
Ashi

| Criterion | Band |

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: the duration of the extension, the reason for the change in plans (visa status and daughter's schooling), and the maintenance issue regarding the bathtub. The tone is appropriate for a formal request to a landlord. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. The response is fully on-topic and meets all requirements of the prompt, demonstrating a clear understanding of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the request. Cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'However', and 'Because of that reason' are used to link ideas. While some transitions are slightly mechanical, the overall progression of information is smooth and easy to follow. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the request for extension from the maintenance issue.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary is sufficient for the task and allows for clear communication. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as '6 months deed' instead of 'six-month lease' and 'in between her session' instead of 'in the middle of her school term'. However, these do not impede meaning. The student attempts to use some specific terminology like 'permanent residence' and 'academic year', which adds to the clarity of the letter. The range is adequate for a general task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as '2 more year' (should be 'years'), 'supposed to be finished' (should be 'is supposed to be finished'), and 'I tried to fixed it' (should be 'I tried to fix it'). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout. The punctuation is generally functional, though there are some minor issues with article usage and verb tense consistency. The errors do not significantly hinder the reader's understanding.
