Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Wouter,
I hope you are doing great. I am writing to inform you about extension of rented apartment-901 in your building 2150.
To begin with, before I had planned to stay six-month until my university session. Therefore, now educational department add one new subject in the course which is extremely mandatory to attend and pass for qualification. Owing to this particular reason I wish to stay one more year in your apartment.
Additionally, I found an incredible working place near to the building and I have signed the contract for one year with the manager of the company. Hence, I have two particular reasons to reside long-term on that place.
Nevertheless, over the past two weeks I am suffering through the problem in the apartment. I noticed cockroaches in the kitchen and bathroom area, it is really unhygienic to see that insects at home.
Thankyou for you time and consideration. I would be grateful if you could look into this matter and take a necessary action at your earliest convenience.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly stated the desired extension period, provided a logical explanation for the change in plans, and reported the pest issue in the apartment. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task. To reach a higher band, ensure that your opening and closing statements are slightly more natural and polished, as some phrasing, such as 'extension of rented apartment-901', feels a bit mechanical.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Additionally', and 'Nevertheless' to guide the reader through your points. However, some of the transitions feel slightly repetitive or forced. For example, 'Hence, I have two particular reasons' is a bit clunky. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between sentences could be improved by varying the sentence structure more effectively to create a smoother progression of ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'mandatory', 'qualification', and 'reside'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'suffering through the problem' (should be 'suffering from') and 'take a necessary action' (should be 'take necessary action'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over common collocations. Expanding your range to include more sophisticated synonyms for everyday actions would help elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'before I had planned to stay six-month' (should be 'six months'), 'educational department add' (should be 'added'), and 'on that place' (should be 'in that place'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions, as these are recurring issues in your writing.
