  • explain why your plans have changed
  • tell the owner about a problem in the apartment

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr Brown,

I am writing to request you to extend the duration of my rent agreement ten-months instead of six-months.

Actually, earlier I decided to pursue short term course along with my full time online job from home, but now, full time programm is selected including two months internship.

My plans are changed because i want to get some hands on experience in the same field. It not only boost my chances to attaract more job opportunities, but also gives me a chance to apply knowledge in real work environment before appearing in any interview.

Here, I would like to mention conceren, which makes my life difficult in this apartment. Its electricity supply issue. Specifically, during at night its cut down and again work in the morining. It disturbes my study and work.

I would be greatful, if could you make attention towards this matter as soon as possible. It would be great help for me to stay comfirtably here. This location is convenient for me because my college is just 5 minutes away.

Thank you for this consideration,

Your faithfully,

Tanvir kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the task: the duration of the extension, the reason for the change, and the issue with the electricity. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation regarding the internship could be more clearly linked to the request for an extension. While the task is fully addressed, the expression of ideas is occasionally slightly unclear, which prevents it from reaching a higher band. Overall, the response is relevant and meets the requirements of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, each serving a clear purpose. The progression of ideas is generally easy to follow. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Actually', 'Specifically', and 'Therefore' (implied), though some transitions are a bit mechanical or slightly misused, such as 'Here, I would like to mention conceren'. The use of referencing is generally clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. To improve, you could use a wider variety of linking words to connect your sentences more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'rent agreement', 'internship', and 'convenient'. However, there are several spelling errors ('conceren', 'attaract', 'disturbes', 'greatful', 'comfirtably') and some awkward collocations ('make attention towards'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading and a broader range of vocabulary to express ideas with greater precision and fewer errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'request you to extend... ten-months instead of six-months' (missing preposition), 'full time programm is selected' (passive voice misuse), and 'during at night its cut down' (incorrect tense and preposition). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. While these errors are frequent, they rarely prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. To reach a higher band, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and prepositions.
