IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.

Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter

  • say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
  • explain why your plans have changed
  • tell the owner about a problem in the apartment

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr Brown,

I am writing to request for an extension of my rent agreement for ten-month instead of six-month.

Actually, earlier I decided to pursue short-term course along with my full time online job from home, but now, full-time programm is selected including two months internship.

My plans have changed because I want to get some practicel experience in the same field. It not only boosts my chances to attract more job opportunities, but also gives me a chance to apply knowledge in a real work environment before appearing in any interview.

Here, I would like to mention a concern, which makes my life difficult in this apartment. This is electricity supply issue. Specifically, during the night ii cuts-down and again work in the morining. It disturbs my study and work.

I would be greatful, if you could pay attention towards this matter as soon as possible. It would be a great help for me to stay comfortably here. This location is convenient for me because my college is just 5 minutes away.

Thank you for this consideration,

Yours faithfully,

Tanvir kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the task. You clearly state the desired extension length, explain the change in your plans due to the internship, and describe the electricity issue. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. The purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning, and the ideas are developed sufficiently to meet the requirements of the task. To reach a higher band, ensure that the request for the extension is phrased more naturally; for example, 'ten-month' should be 'ten months'. Overall, the task is fully addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Actually', 'Specifically', and 'not only... but also' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally slightly mechanical. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the request to the justification, then to the problem, and finally to the closing. The use of paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, which helps the reader follow your argument easily.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'extension', 'internship', and 'convenient'. There are some minor spelling errors ('practicel', 'greatful', 'morining') and word choice issues, such as 'request for an extension of my rent agreement for ten-month'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring correct spelling of common words. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, but lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'request for an extension... for ten-month instead of six-month' (should be 'ten months'), 'full-time programm is selected' (passive voice usage is slightly awkward), and 'it cuts-down and again work' (subject-verb agreement). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. You have attempted some complex structures, but they are not always perfectly controlled. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will help improve your accuracy.
