IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.

Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter

  • say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
  • explain why your plans have changed
  • tell the owner about a problem in the apartment

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr Brown,

I am writing to request an extension of my rent agreement for ten-month instead of six-month.

Actually, earlier I decided to pursue a short-term course along with my full-time online job from home, but now, programm is selected including two months internship.

My plans have changed because I want to get some practicel experience in the same field. It not only boosts my chances to attract more job opportunities, but also gives me a chance to apply knowledge in a real work environment before appearing in any interview.

Here, I would like to mention a concern, which makes my life difficult in this apartment. This is electricity supply issue. Specifically, during the night it cuts down and again work in the morining. It disturbs my study and work.

I would be greatful, if you could pay attention towards this matter as soon as possible. It would be a great help for me to stay comfortably here. This location is convenient for me because my college is just 5 minutes away.

Thank you for this consideration,

Yours faithfully,

Tanvir kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly stated the desired extension period, explained the change in your plans regarding your internship, and identified the electricity supply issue. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. The ideas are relevant and developed sufficiently to meet the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that the duration of the extension is expressed more naturally, such as 'an extension of ten months' rather than 'ten-month instead of six-month'. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the response is well-focused.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your points easily. You use some cohesive devices like 'Actually', 'Specifically', and 'Here, I would like to mention', which help connect your ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect sentences more fluidly. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall structure is coherent and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'extension', 'internship', 'convenient', and 'consideration'. There are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'practicel' (practical) and 'greatful' (grateful). Additionally, 'cuts down' is not the most natural collocation for electricity; 'flickers' or 'goes out' would be more precise. While you attempt to use some less common vocabulary, the occasional inaccuracies do not impede communication. Focusing on correct spelling and more precise collocations will help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'for ten-month instead of six-month' (should be 'for ten months instead of six'), 'programm is selected' (should be 'my program includes'), and 'again work in the morining' (should be 'works again in the morning'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and article usage. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures while maintaining accuracy will help you move into the higher band range.
